Laid over to the right I found my trimmings box, with a hand-drawn spider on top and a scribble underneath ‘the coast is clear, no more squeals without me’ as my grin became wide remembering, I must thank him later. I pulled a 3ft square wooden hanging frame out from the sides when an idea rocketed for window display number one, a cutesy scene I could portray.
The wooden frame had the option in the corner of being able to be suspended from the ceiling, as I searched deep in the base of my box of gizmos to come across some interlocking brass hoops. The lighting in the window was elegant and authentic, one of the reasons that drew me in being a hook chandelier. The hoops I had discovered could easily hang over the curved arms, so it hung halfway and central on the room.
The designs I liked to undertake were simple but eye-catching with lighting that flickered due to the subdued, adjusted, contrasted fairy lights, I had wanted to capture within. My idea was to thread them around the edge of the wood to highlight and pinpoint so the potential clients could see the natural beauty and organic shape of the main attraction.
As I perched high on my tiptoes, as I attempt to keep my balance on the stool, I heard the familiar shop bell alert me to a customer. I let them know I was on my way when I took a step down and wound my head around the curtain to be curious, Adam, my best friend, stood there with his boyish grin and charm. A questioned cocky raised brow and his hands perched on his hips you would think he enjoyed the ordain task of seeing my misery at this time of year especially as he just belly laughs as I end up with half the lights wrapped around me, looking more like a Christmas tree at present then where I needed them. “Valentine’s taking over, Violet?” as his smooth caramel toned voice ran through me.
“When doesn’t it, hey? Why all this fuss for one day, remind me to stop this silly tradition, yeah? Least it’s nearly over for another year, just another six days after today, hey.” As I continue to try to untangle the delicate lights, knowing that Adam is lapping up every single damn second of this show in front of his eyes. Noticing my frustration begin to escalate, his macho stance appears in front of my eyes as he finally decides to step in and give me a hand rather than carry on enjoying the laughingstock I felt I’ve become.
With Adam’s day at the markets done I expected him to go home, sleep surely, he would be exhausted after the early start but nope he promised to help me. True to his word we worked side by side, as each fairy light was placed and positioned with care ready for the floral display. I had taken a mixture of blue and red roses, petals faded in rich shades, along with a trio of carnation heads in a vibrant ruby red and strands of the Ammi majus to intertwine into a heart shape. Suspended in perfect alignment centrally to the windowsill, I admired the view created as a whole. It was perfect to my eye to say the least.
Three years Adam has been by my side and each year our relationship has blossomed and grown, friendships I normally struggled with but ours just felt natural and flowed effortlessly. I just may have one small little problem, a secret I’ve kept hidden in the back of my mind, that I don’t want to accept. If I do decide to act upon it, I may lose the one good thing I have left in my life. So yes, lust is my only option.
Chapter Four
Adam
With the break of dawn wakeup call fast becoming like a record player each day, exhaustion and sleep would soon overcome my mind, there is only so much a body can run on before it hits empty and needs recharging. My dirty mind kicked in at the sheer thought of my body being ready for her curves to slot perfectly aligned next to me, knowing though I must keep my health in check, my mind always first would wander to Violet. Her needs would always be paramount to those thoughts, even though the engorged bulge didn’t agree.
See, I’m the type of person, the ‘one who didn’t realise till it was too late’,
