to be right now.”
“Ah the ever-charming Kirk Silvers! I was thinking we could meet. Maybe I’ll stop by the office tomorrow if that works for you.”
“Why? What is this about?” I ask.
“I just had dinner with Kim, and I thought I should touch base with you too.”
“Why?” I snap. My defensive walls are rising even higher now.
“We can talk tomorrow, Kirk. Didn’t you say you have somewhere to be? Goodnight.”
The call ends quickly. Too quickly. If they had dinner together tonight, there is a high possibility that Kim has told Blaire everything.
I shouldn’t care what an ex-girlfriend thinks of me, but I like Blaire. I feel like I’m breaking a code. Besides, Kim is an employee.
“Shit,” I grumble loudly as I put my phone away. I’ve changed my mind about going out. There is too much going on.
The next day at work, I stare suspiciously at Kim while she works at her desk. I can see her through the glass walls of my office. She looks innocent enough, but I suspect she’s spoken to Blaire. She’s told her everything.
I am not looking forward to the conversation with her tonight, but at the same time, I know I deserve whatever is coming my way. I am the one who made a move on Kim. I am the one who should be held responsible for what happened between us, so if Blaire wants to tear me down, I’ll face it and accept whatever consequences come my way.
Through the day, I’m stuck in meetings and phone calls. I have a pile of research material to get through, and I don’t have much time to think about Kim. Thankfully. However, she is always there hovering in the back of my mind.
I feel a warm glow in my chest every time I see her, and I try to push it away.
The day is now winding to an end. Once again, I am going to be stuck in my office till late, which is just as well since Blaire said she would stop by after work.
Kim eventually knocks on my door to ask if I need her for anything else.
“No, you can leave now,” I say without really looking in her direction.
“Okay, thank you,” she says politely and turns to go, but stops. That is when I look up, I know she is about to say something. Something of significance.
Kim is wearing a dark green dress with short sleeves that make her arms look slender and long. The green suits the translucent complexion of her skin, makes her eyes pop bright. She’s tied her hair into a neat bun to the side. She’s wearing sensible black heels, and yet her hips sway as she walks slowly towards me.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Silvers. I know things have just started to return to normal between us, but there is something that’s been playing on my mind…about us. I feel like I have to ask you.”
This is the thing about Kim that I probably like the most. Just when I forget and start thinking she is just another polite and hardworking employee, she does something to surprise me. To remind me that she is so much more than that. The zing and spark in her personality haven’t gone anywhere.
I lean forward in my chair, letting my pen drop down on my desk.
“Okay, go ahead, ask me what you need to ask,” I say.
She drops her gaze down to the ground, and I can see her licking her lips nervously.
“I want to know,” she begins and lifts her head up. We are looking into each other’s eyes again, and this moment reminds me of that night when we were staring at each other, just seconds before I finally kissed her. “If you stopped and walked away because of what I said.”
For a few moments, I don’t even know what she’s talking about. Then I remember. She means her declaration about being a virgin.
Before I can stop myself, a smile grazes my lips. Her eyes sparkle as she stares at me intently, watching every shift in my expression. I know she wasn’t expecting me to smile at that.
What I really want to tell her is that I have thought of nothing else other than how mind-blowing it would be if I had continued with what I started. That I have spent every night since then fantasizing about seeing her naked. It doesn’t matter to me that she is a virgin. It doesn’t change a thing about how madly I want her.
There’s a
