my arm at him and shooting a vine after him.
He dodged to the left then shot more fire my way as he leapt over the vine, this time making the fireball so big that it blocked my view of him. But I knew this beast well enough to know his moves now and as he chased the fireball directly towards me, I gritted my teeth and stood my ground, throwing a shield of dirt up between us to absorb the blow and letting my vines fall to the floor forgotten.
The fire exploded over the top of my head and Cain smashed straight through my shield, dirt scattering over me a moment before he collided with me and he drove me against the wall at my back.
He snarled at me, fangs bared, fury and betrayal glistening in his eyes as I made no move to fight him off, my arms hanging loose at my sides and his fingers biting into my waist.
"It wasn't a lie," I said in rough voice, making him pause just long enough for me to lean forward and press my lips to his, letting him taste the truth of those words and all of the confusing, fucked up things I shouldn't have been feeling for him in the movement of my mouth against his.
His hands tightened around my waist as he pushed me back into the wall, growling as he kissed me and a single tear spilled from my eye, racing down my cheek and falling against his jaw.
Cain pulled back as he felt it, frowning at me in confusion before he tried to lift his hand to touch me and realised he couldn't.
The vines I'd coiled around his hands were tight and impenetrable. They immobilised each of his fingers and locked his magic down, rendering it useless.
Cain snarled in fury as he tried to break the vines with brute force, throwing his Vampire strength into ripping them from the floor where I'd grown the roots deep and strong. It was no use. I'd been taught how to immobilise an enemy by the King of the Oscura Clan. No one could break those bonds unless I let them free.
"Bitch!" Cain roared in my face, his features written in heartbreak and betrayal.
"I just want to be free," I replied, another tear slipping down my cheek. "I didn't mean for us to happen. But I'm not sad that it did."
Cain opened his mouth to reply just as the door banged open and Sin whooped with excitement as he raced back towards us with Ethan at his side.
"Beastie is having a feast of the Watchers," Sin called. "He's as happy as a bioweapon at a barbecue!"
I slipped away from Cain as he looked at me like I was a stranger. A stranger he hated with more fury than I'd ever known even in him.
"I have to go," I breathed as he glared at me.
Ethan and Sin appeared between the shelves and Sin laughed with a dark and terrifying excitement as he spotted Cain rooted in place, helpless and at our mercy. He ignited twin flames in his hands and his eyes danced with shadows as he stalked towards the guard with murder written all over his face.
"No," I commanded, stepping into his path. "If you hurt him, Sin Wilder, I'll kill you."
Sin's lips parted in shock then turned into a pout just as fast. "I know you wanna bang him, wild girl, but that bastard will hunt us to the ends of the earth if we leave him alive."
I raised my chin, glaring at him as I warned him to back down. "Maybe I like the hunt."
Ethan shook his head like he didn't know what to make of me then grabbed my hand and yanked me towards the tunnel at the back of the room.
"We need to hurry, love," he urged and I nodded, shooting one final look back at Cain as I ran along at his side.
Cain's jaw was working furiously and it seemed like he had something to say, but we didn't have the time to find out what it was.
"You'll never get out of here!" he shouted just as I dropped down to crawl into the hole behind the bookshelf.
"Just watch us, asshole," Ethan called back dismissively.
"I mean it," Cain snarled. "We switched on the new bioweapon today. There’s a magical forcefield beneath the ground surrounding the entire prison. If you pass through it, you're dead."
"What?" I gasped, whipping back around with my heart in my throat
