They might end up in the hole if they were caught and if not, that memory crystal would be handed over to the FIB and everything we were doing here would be for nothing. I could deal with Gustard alone. I didn't need either of them risking anything for me.
"It's no big deal," I said dismissively, moving around Ethan and heading to Roary's side. He tugged me under his arm and I let him even though I knew in my heart that I shouldn't. But I needed the reassuring contact from a member of my pack...not that Roary really was my pack, but sometimes it felt like he was. He reminded me of home, and he made me feel safe in a way that had nothing to do with protecting me from murderous psychopaths.
Ethan growled as he moved to my other side, keeping pace with us as we headed down the stairs, but he stopped with the questions, clearly realising he wasn't going to get any answers.
With Roary's arm around me, I didn't stumble again, but I definitely didn't feel like I was on top form.
We headed into the library and found the boss man waiting for us, his hair still wet from a shower and his uniform crisp and fresh. I guessed he'd just started his shift but as his eyes fell on me and lit with a fiery rage, I also guessed he'd heard about my little incident upstairs.
My gaze fixed on him for so long that it took me a while to notice the new addition to our crew, but when I did, I sucked in a breath of horror.
"Two-Hundred has just returned from his stint in the hole," Cain said, flicking a look my way that said he wasn't best pleased about landing me in a room with that Dragon Shifter motherfucker either. So why the fuck was he? "The warden thinks it would be good for him to work alongside Eighty-Eight so that the two of you can get past your issues and the prison can be a happy place again."
"I went to the hole for a murder he committed," Sin growled ferociously, pointing at Christopher in accusation. "You can't seriously think we are going to just work through shit like that?"
Damn, he was hot when he growled and even hotter when he lied. Shit, I almost believed him, and I was the one who had planted the murder weapon on Christopher the pervy Dragon to get Sin off the hook. Well, technically Roary had, but I'd been the one to go get his secret shank so that we could plant it on the bastardo and let him rot in the hole. Though I didn't personally feel like he'd rotted for nearly long enough. I got three months because Cain threw a bitch fit and he got five for murder. How the fuck did that work out?
"I don't give a shit if you work it out or not," Cain drawled. "Frankly, I hope you try to kill each other and I come back here to find a body waiting at the end of your shift. Then I can get rid of one of you for good and send the other to rot in the hole again. It's win-win for me and the world as a whole."
Sin smirked like he'd just been given a free pass and I bit my lip as I eye fucked him so hard, I was surprised he hadn't come in his pants. The filthy look he gave me said he could sure as hell tell what I was thinking though and I was seriously hoping he'd follow through on that promise in his eyes soon.
"I need a word, Twelve," Cain barked, drawing my gaze back to him and in my slightly excitable state, I may have had to check him out too. Yeah, Cain would totally get it if he wasn't such a stronzo.
"Of course you do," Roary muttered as Cain strode towards me and he threw the Lion a dark look filled with hatred before taking my arm and tugging me towards the stacks at the side of the room.
"The rest of you get to work," Cain barked and the others all headed off towards the back of the library as commanded, though I could feel eyes on me as I walked away.
We kept walking until the cameras couldn't see us anymore and Cain threw a silencing bubble over us too.
"Hastings just told me what happened," Cain growled, looking down
