walked in?”
She tries to hide her wince like the good friend that she is but I still caught it. “Yikes.” She’s got that right. “Well, let’s open a bottle and you can start telling me everything, from the beginning.” She eyes me speculatively. “I have a feeling that there is a lot more to the story than you just hooking up with an ex.”
I sigh and nod my head sadly. “Got a corkscrew?” She opens up a drawer and then tosses me one. “We should probably start off with two bottles.” I ignore how wide her eyes go. “It’s a bit of a doozy.”
She nods her head and grabs two wine glasses from her cabinet.
For the next hour, I tell her absolutely everything about Danny and I. Her mouth remained open in shock for almost the entire time making her look like a guppy.
“And after I ran my ass out of his house, I jumped into my car and called you.” I take another sip of wine. “And now you’re all caught up.”
She takes a huge gulp of wine while never taking her eyes off of me. “Wow. Yeah, I really wasn’t expecting that. Well, the Danny part was pretty obvious the day that he came in.” She gives me an evil grin. “Plus he kept requesting you which pissed Karen the hell off.”
I snort. “I’ll bet. The evil cow.” I mutter. “Who did he end up having as a nurse anyway? I never checked.” I choke on my wine a bit at her response.
“Me.” She says simply.
“What? But you, well you try not to have any of our male patients, umm, well that are ya know…younger.” I stutter out lamely. I try not to ever bring any of that up. I hate seeing the sad look in her eyes. Except it’s not there right now. Her eyes are twinkling actually. What the hell?
“Yeah, well, after I put two and two together, I said that I would take him as a patient.” She states calmly.
“But why babe? He’s not a small man honey.” I say lowly.
She gives me a patient smile. “No, he’s actually very big and intimidating.” I go to say something but she beats me to it. “But, that man looked like someone had kicked his puppy when he was told that he couldn’t have you as his nurse. I figured that he couldn’t be too bad if he looked that sad.” She gives me that mischievous grin again. “Plus, every other nurse on our floor was trying there damn best to either get him or his attention. I figured that I should probably take him so that you didn’t end up stabbing one of your fellow nurses with a syringe.”
I purse my lips at the thought of all those other hookers trying to flirt with Danny. “That was probably a smart idea.” I concede.
She snorts into her wine glass. “No shit. Especially after everything that you just told me. I definitely saved a few lives.”
“No one likes a smug bitch.” I drawl making her crack up.
“Please! The look on your face alone when I just said how many of them tried to get his attention was serial killer worthy! Face it girl, you still have it bad.”
I place my glass down onto the coffee table and cover my face with my hands before groaning loudly. “Don’t remind me. It sucks to still be crazy in love with someone that you can’t be with.”
“Yeah, I’m still not getting the part as to why you can’t be with him.”
I drop my hands and gape at her. “Umm, hello.” I wave my hand in front of her face. “Did you miss the part about a hoochie jumping into his arms and kissing the hell out of him. Or the part where he was a total manwhore?”
“Was is the key word in that sentence. But yes, I heard all of that. And I get it. That was awful to witness. I’m totally not down playing that. I would’ve run away and threw up. But that man looked so damn miserable about not being able to be near you. Do you really think that he doesn’t feel the same way about you?”
Argh, I hate when my friends make actual sense. She’s supposed to be commiserating with me, not using logic.
“I’m sure that he does feel the same way.” Okay, I know that he does but still. “But a zebra doesn’t change it’s stripes. He may be happy with me for a while,
