that bitch back. I’m sure that there are quite a few other women running to him to see if he’s okay.
Bitter party of one, your table is now ready. Bitter party of one.
“I figured that you would have some inside knowledge of how the food is since you work here.” Danny says while still giving me a puppy dog look.
“Sure,” I shrug, “it all sucks. Avoid if you can. If you can’t, get stuff like bread or anything baked. And never get the fish.”
“That’s it? Avoid it? That’s all the advice that you can give me?” He scoffs. I get it. It sounded like a brush off.
“I’m being serious. I just told you what you needed to know. Have someone else bring your meals in. If not, then prepare to either starve or eat things that taste like crap.” He just continues to stare at me. “And I meant it. The fish is always questionable. Pretend like that’s not even on the menu.”
His eyes narrow on mine. “You’ve told me plenty of times that you eat the food here.”
I roll my eyes and walk over to his IV. I might as well do some stuff while I’m in here. “Yeah Dan, I do eat the food here. From the cafeteria. The food that patients get and what the rest of us get are two totally different things.”
His eyes go wide. “Seriously?”
I nod my head. “Yup. The entire time that Brad was in here, Aimee and I took turns at packing all of his meals and bringing them in from home.”
“I always thought that he was just on a specific type of diet.” He gives me an adorably sheepish look that I will not melt for. Absolutely not!
I snort. “Yeah a specific diet of good tasting food. I wouldn’t even feed my dog the food that they give patients.”
“I heard that you ended up getting that puppy.” He says in a low voice with his eyes boring into mine.
What he doesn’t say is that I got the puppy that we picked out together five months ago.
Five Months Ago:
“He’s so cute!” I squeal like a child. “Oh my God, look at those eyes, they’re gorgeous.” I just keep on gushing about how cute all the puppies are.
Danny came with me to the breeders house to come and look at a Cane Corso puppy.
I was watching a video about a year ago and this massive black dog with yellow eyes walked onto the screen. Legit, this thing looked like a panther and I was in love. I looked up what it was and I spiraled down a rabbit hole of information on Cane Corsos or Italian Mastiffs. I went through all of the literature online that I could find. I then got sucked into videos for them. A lot of owners video theirs Corsos because they have so much personality.
Needless to say, I decided that I wanted one of my own. Brad wasn’t overly ecstatic, especially since we live in an apartment, but once I showed him all the videos, he was pretty hooked too.
I started researching breeders and found one that had puppies on the way. The momma just had them five weeks ago and they are the cutest things that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. For real, not even newborn babies are this cute! And that puppy smell! I could sniff them forever.
“Are you sure that you want something that’s going to get so big?” Danny questions while giving the puppy, okay more like me snuggling the puppy, a dubious look. “Don’t you want something a little smaller that will be easier for you to control?”
Which is a valid question. These dogs can get up to one hundred and sixty pounds. “Yes, I’m sure. I’ve done a ton of research and they’re extremely intelligent. They love to please their owners and train easier than most dogs.” I give the ball of fluffiness one more squeeze before putting it back down on the grass. “Plus, I like the idea of having a large guard dog. I want to know that I can go for a hike or walk alone just the two of us and that I’ll be perfectly safe.”
“Why would you ever go hiking alone?” Danny growls.
I cross my arms over my chest, a move that his eyes zero in on. Ahh, men! “Really? That’s the only part that you heard?” Good grief.
“And that you don’t feel safe. I’ll walk with you if you want to feel safe.” He
