face is suddenly very solemn. “Trust me man, for the right woman, you have no idea how long my game can be.”
I raise my eyebrow but don’t ask any of the questions that are rolling through my brain right now. If he wanted me to know, I would. “Alright Cupid, whatchya got for me?”
He gives me a smile full of teeth. “How’s your arm feeling?”
“Why?” I ask only a bit concerned for my safety.
“You’ll see.”
That’s not ominous or anything. But I just mentally shrug. Fuck it. What else do I have left to lose?
Stacey
I jolt at the sound of my phone ringing. I’ve been reading a new romance novel for the past few hours since I have the apartment to myself. It’s not very often that it’s this quiet. Brad went out for the day and took Dante with him so that he could get in more socialization. Which is uber important since he’s going to be so big. The last thing that I need is an overly aggressive one hundred and fifty pound dog. I want him to guard me, not attack everyone that I come into contact with.
I look down at my phone and frown when I don’t recognize the number. I don’t normally answer numbers that I don’t know since they’re usually telemarketers but this is a local number.
I hit the green button. “Hello?”
“Hey, is this Stacey?” A deep velvety voice questions. A voice that sounds vaguely familiar, but I just can’t place it.
“This is her. Who’s speaking?” I go with my professional tone. You never know. Those annoying telemarketers could’ve somehow gotten a local number or something. Anything is possible these days. I’ve already inherited money from a Nigerian prince like six times this past year if the spam in my email is anything to go by.
“Edge. We’ve met a few times at the gym.” And there goes my stomach plummeting again.
“Umm, hi. Can I help you with something?” I do know who he is, but I have no idea why he would be calling me or how he even got my number.
“I just spoke with Brad who gave me your number. Hope it’s okay that I called you.” Well that explains that one.
I sit up further on the couch and pick at imaginary lint on my blanket. “It’s fine, I’m just not sure why you would need to call me.” I say hesitantly. I don’t want to be rude but I have no idea why he would want my number.
“I was just at Danny’s house checking up on him and he didn’t look too good. I asked Brad if he could swing by and check on him, but he said that he wasn’t in the area. He said that you were actually Danny’s nurse and that you shouldn’t have a problem with checking in on him to make sure that he’s healing okay.”
“Oh.” The air rushes out of my lungs. I nibble on my lip and consider what I should say. “I mean, if he isn’t doing well, he should probably go to the Emergency Room and get looked at by a doctor.”
Edge chuckles on the other line and I notice that it doesn’t have the same effect on me like Danny’s does. “Yeah, I told him that he looked like shit and should go see a doctor. But his ass is stubborn and said that he was fine. Dude didn’t look right though. But he’s a grown ass man and I can’t force him to do anything.”
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Stupid, stubborn mule. I know that he won’t go.
I sigh loudly. “Fine, I can go check in on him in a few minutes to make sure that he doesn’t have an infection or any other complications from his procedure. Would you like me to call you back when I leave his house?”
“Nah, just knowing that you went is good enough for me.” Huh, if I was worried about my friend, I would want a call back to know how he’s doing. Men are so strange.
“Umm, okay, well thanks for the call. I’ll go and check on him. Bye.”
“Don’t you need his address?”
I slap myself against my forehead. Of course I wouldn’t just magically know where he lives. “Ahh, yes, I ah, I do need it. Could you give it to me please?” I say sheepishly, extremely glad that he can’t see how red my face is.
He gives me the address that I already know by heart and hangs up. I put the phone
