voice deep. “I do like to be honest and I do like to be up-front, but I would like to respect your wishes. Yes, you’re a beautiful lady. And I wanted you to know that, but please know that I also want to make you comfortable.” He frowned, “Oh my God. I sound like an idiot and totally inappropriate, don’t I?”
“I wouldn’t say you sound like an idiot.”
“I’m an attorney, which I guess you already know from my profile. Sometimes I can be a little bit too serious when it comes to sexual harassment,” he made a face. “Not that this is sexual harassment. Sorry. I’ve been in the middle of rewriting the manual at work. And you know, I don’t want to cross any lines.”
“Don’t worry, Lucas. You’re not crossing any lines. I mean, frankly, I’d love to kiss you too. But yeah, this is our first date. Let’s order some pie first and see where it goes.” I laughed, feeling much more comfortable with him. “So tell me a couple of things about yourself.”
“Well, let’s see. What can I say? I’m an attorney.”
“I think we got that covered already.”
“Yeah. I have two parents.”
“Oh really?” I pretended to be shocked. “Not five or six?”
“I know. I sound like an absolute idiot. You wouldn’t think I ranked first in my law school class at Harvard.”
“Wow. So you’re saying you’re pretty intelligent?”
“Yeah. I’m saying I’m just a little bit intelligent.” His lips twisted up in a delightfully sexy manner and I swallowed hard. I wanted to kiss those pink juicy lips and snack on them.
“Well, good for you. Do you have a big family?” I loved the fact that he wasn’t put off by my slightly sarcastic banter.
“No, I have one brother.”
“Oh, okay. Cool. Are you guys close?”
“We’re pretty close. He’s sort of like my exact opposite, but you know, that’s cool. He lives in the city as well. I see him a couple of times a month. We’re good friends, but I wouldn’t say that we’re in each other’s life on a day to day basis.”
“Oh, so you wouldn’t say he’s your best friend then?” I said surprised. “Is he a lot older or a lot younger than you?”
“No, he’s definitely my best friend and we’re close in age, but we just have different interests,” he grinned. “But that’s enough about my dorky little brother. My parents are still happily married and they’re the reason why I’m looking for love.” He made a face, “even saying that just sounds so corny.”
“No, I like it. I’m looking for love as well. And it’s better you say you’re looking for love then looking for sex.”
“Oh, why is that?” he smirked.
“I think you know why.”
“No. Tell me, Gemma.”
“Well, if you told me you were looking for sex then I would know that you’re only looking for one thing and that was not really why I joined the service.”
“True. I mean, I’m sure both of us could have plenty of noncommittal sex if we wanted to. But yeah, I’m looking for someone to settle down with. It’s about that time.”
“Wow. I’m impressed.”
“I mean, I have to let you in on a little secret.”
“What’s that?”
“My grandparents signed me up for this dating app,” he made a face. “I know it sounds totally lame. Not even my parents dared to get involved with my love life. My grandparents signed me up. They think my brother and I should get married already. And this was their Christmas present to us.”
“Oh wow. Interesting. I’ve never heard such a thing before. Hopefully my grandparents don’t know your grandparents.” I laughed.
“Yeah, I guess they’re ready for great grandkids.”
“Yeah, I can say they are,” I laughed. “But I totally understand. My parents and my grandparents are all so ready for me to get married and have kids. So I get it.”
“Oh, interesting. Really?”
“Yeah. I come from the typical, big Greek family where everyone’s in your business and they try to make the best decision for you. And I’m pretty sure that if I don’t have a boyfriend within a year, I’m going to be shipped off to Greece to marry someone’s cousin and live in some little fisherman’s village or something.”
“Well, you never know. That might be quite cool. I heard the Greek islands are amazing.”
“Yeah. You know, I’ve been to Mykonos and that was really cool. But I don’t really want to live in Greece. The culture there is very different.”
“Yeah. I understand where you’re coming from. My parents’ ancestors
