Hey morning, did you sleep well last night?
Lucas: Thinking of you. Want to grab lunch?
“Aah shit.” I knew there was no way I could see him today. I had a feeling he’d be able to tell from my face that I just had sex and I didn’t need any awkward questions. I responded quickly.
Gemma: Hey, feeling a bit under the weather. Going to have to pass today but maybe another time?
I pressed send and then regret it as soon as I sent it.
Maybe another time indicated that there may not be another time. I hope he wasn’t like me and I hope he didn’t read too much into my message.
Lucas: Oh no. I hope you’re okay. You don’t have a bug, do you? Do you need me to bring you over anything?
Gemma: No, no. I’m good thanks.
I sent back quickly. The last thing I need is him showing up at my apartment with chicken soup and some bread.
Lucas: Oh okay, good. I’m on the way to the office right now but if you need anything let me know and I can get my secretary to order you something.
I stared at the phone, get his secretary to order me something? Really Lucas? Are you trying to win my heart or do you think you’ve already got it? I frowned. What was he talking about, get his secretary to send me something? I thought the least I deserved was him to show up.
I wondered if I was being too needy and if my expectations were too high. Was it too much to expect the guy I was kind of seeing to want to show up at my door with food to help me feel better?
“Gemma, are you really questioning Lucas right now?” I said out loud. “You who just slept with another guy this morning?” I groaned again. If I groaned any more times I was going to become a groan.
I closed my eyes, all I wanted to do was sleep. I just needed a good sleep, a little catnap, and then I’d wake up and I’d create a list of all the pros and all the cons for Connor and for Lucas. And then on New Year’s Eve, I’d go to the two parties and I’d decide who I wanted to be with.
I text Lucas and then I text Connor the same exact text message.
Gemma: Hey, can you tell me the details for New Year’s Eve? Just want to coordinate with my friend to figure out which party to go to first and the logistics of it all. Thanks.
I pressed send on both of them, praying that the parties were at least within a five to ten-mile radius of each other so that I’d have ample time to go back and forth between the two.
The last thing I needed was one to be in Queens and one to be in Manhattan. I just didn’t want to be spending half my night in a taxi.
I got Connor’s text message back first.
Connor: It’s going to be on the Upper East Side. It’s a pretty big party but I think you’ll have fun. Let me know around what time you want to get there.
Gemma: Sounds good. Can I get the address please? *Smiley face.
Then Lucas’s text message came through and I frowned. Lucas: Upper East Side. Are you coming to my party first or second?
“Huh,” I said out loud. Both parties were on the Upper East Side. That seemed like a bit of a coincidence but pretty cool for me, it should be easy to get between the two.
Gemma: Can I get the exact address please?
Maybe I won’t even need to take a cab between the two, I grinned to myself. Maybe I can walk if I don’t wear heels that are too high of course.
Lucas sent back the address and then Connor did. I froze as I stared at their two text messages.
“Oh, shit shit shit shit shit shit,” I started muttering to myself.” I jumped up and ran through my apartment. “Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.” The addresses were both the same. They’d both invited me to the same party, how the hell had this happened?
Okay, take a deep breath. Gemma, take a deep breath, take a deep breath, take a deep breath. I could feel myself close to a nervous breakdown, I had no idea what I was going to do.
Gemma: How big is the party exactly?
I sent them back both the same message. “Please say ten thousand people, twenty
