her knees beside him. She took his hand and leaned down, her nose touching his. She told him that she was sorry. She told him that it was all her fault. She apologized for not being the mate that he deserved. Tears fell from her eyes and onto his face and she wiped them away, whispering that she loved him.
Someone touched her shoulder and she turned to see Fritz standing behind her. He kneeled beside her and ripped open Dirk?s shirt. He was breathing steadily. Jane eyes studied the wound and it registered that the bullet hadn?t entered his chest. It had hit his shoulder.
Chapter 30
An hour later, Jane stood in a motel room looking down at Dirk. He looked at peace. Tears stung her eyes as she thought again that it was her fault that her mate lie here wounded. It was also her fault that her sister was gone. Some of the other men had checked all the houses on the property and they?d all been empty, including the one that she?d been held in. No more of Maximil?s men had arrived and Jane knew that Maximil had abandoned the ones she and the others had killed, sacrificing them so that he could make an escape. What she was unsure of, was what he?d possibly be planning that he?d take her sister along with him.
Jane inhaled a shaky breath and closed her eyes. She?d failed everyone. She?d failed Dirk, she?d failed her sister and somehow, over the years, she?d failed herself. She was disgusted with herself that she?d allowed Maximil to fill her head with such lies. According to him, the Wolfzburg pack was a greedy, domineering pack of wolves who hungered for power and wealth. She?d seen firsthand that that was not true. In comparison now, the tough group of Wolfzburg warriors were much more like a family than anything she?d ever experienced. Her pack never shared meals together or even trained together. They were more like employees or servants who did their Alpha?s dirty work. They were alone and on their own most of the time and only spoke with him when he had a job for them.
There was a knock on the door and then it opened. Ica stepped inside with two bowls in her hands, and bandages. Jane wiped her eyes and turned to look into the bowls. She wasn?t sure what was in them, but it smelled horrible.
Ica sat down on the edge of the bed next to Dirk and began cleaning his wound. Jane swallowed against a growl that rose in her throat at the sight of another woman tending to her mate. Especially with the knowledge that the wound would heal on its own in a matter of no time. The wolf inside her wanted to rip Ica?s arm off, but Jane tried to suppress the animal, telling it that she was only trying to help him, even though a small part of her agreed with the beast.
When Ica was finished, she packed the wound with a mixture of herbs and put a bandage over it. She stood from the bed and looked at Jane. ?Fritz tells me you have a nasty cut that needs cleaned up.?
?It?s fine,? Jane waved her off, but Ica approached her anyway.
?Where is it?? the girl questioned.
Deciding that arguing with her would be useless and knowing that Fritz would be angry if she killed her, Jane bit her tongue and rolled up her sleeve.
The girl?s eyes widened and horror was plain on her face as she looked at Jane?s arm. She never commented on it, however and went to work cleaning it. Jane hadn?t paid much attention to it but now, as Ica cleaned it with antiseptic, she saw just how infected the wound really was.
Ica packed the wound with the same herbs as she?d used on Dirk and as she wrapped a bandage around it, she whispered, ?You know, he?s going to be okay. And so will you.?
Jane?s eyes met hers and Ica gave her an encouraging smile. Jane didn?t return it, she just looked away. She knew that Dirk would heal and her arm eventually would too. However, it was the internal injuries that she thought Ica was referring to and those were the ones that she wasn?t sure she?d ever recover from.
She sat down next to Dirk and ran her fingers through his hair. She gasped when she saw his eyes flutter.
She leaned down and using the words he?d said to her so
