you and I didn?t know if you were up for it.?
Jane squinted at him, not understanding and asked, ?Why would they be so eager to meet me??
?The unmated ones, Jane,? Dirk whispered with a sneer.
?Oh,? Jane mouthed. ?Funny that finding my mate was all I could think about until I got here. It never dawned on me that one of these men could be him.?
Dirk?s jaw tensed and then he opened his mouth like he was about to say something, but the waiter arrived with their food and Dirk withdrew.
Jane looked down at the plate in front of her and, although it looked strange, it looked and smelled good. So did the stew that was in the bowl next to it. She glanced up at Dirk and asked, ?What did you say this was called??
?The sandwich is a d枚ner kebap and the soup is called eintopf.?
Jane picked it up from the plate, taking another sniff. The scent of turkey filled her nose. It wasn?t at the top of the list with bloody steaks, but it was certainly appetizing. She took a small bite, chewing it thoroughly, tasting it, sampling it. ?I really like it,? Jane smiled at Dirk.
?I thought you would,? he smiled back.
Jane tried the soup as well and found that it tasted pretty good too.
Dirk ate quickly, so Jane did the same, assuming that he must be in a hurry to continue with her testing. When they were finished, Dirk left money on the table and led her out of the room.
Chapter 9
Dirk led Jane outside to an area that had been sectioned off, designated for weapon training. He took her into a building and unlocked a door to a room that housed all of the pack?s guns. A wide variety of guns of all sizes lined every wall of the room. She watched as Dirk looked around, seeming to be choosing carefully. He pulled a rifle from the wall, then locked the door to the room and showed her out a back door.
Jane looked around at the targets that sat all around the field. Her wolf sight narrowed in at the tree line in the distance and she saw even more targets hidden among the weeds near the trees.
Dirk handed her the gun and asked, ?Do you know how to use this??
Jane held the gun in her hands and stared down at it. It seemed so strange, yet so familiar. She shrugged, not really knowing how to answer.
Dirk placed a set of ear muffs on her head, then his own, then helped her position the gun against her shoulder and turned the safety off. ?Don?t touch the trigger until you?re ready to fire.?
Jane nodded once in understanding and looked down the sights at her target. She gripped the gun firmly and watched as the sights circled the center of the target as she breathed in and out. She took a breath and exhaled, slowly squeezing the trigger as the air left her body. The gunshot rang in her ears despite the muffs that covered them. She wondered how her sensitive Mystiko-lykos hearing would ever recover.
Dirk lifted a set of binoculars from his chest and stared through them at the target she?d shot at. He didn?t say anything, but Jane saw the corner of his mouth curve into a slight grin and wondered what it meant.
?Did I hit it?? Jane questioned.
Dirk pointed at the targets across the field. Jane looked up at them and tried to estimate how far away they were. She was guessing they were at least 800 yards from where she stood. ?Hit that one,? Dirk instructed.
?The one all the way over there?? Jane asked, surprised by his request.
Dirk nodded once and she raised a brow at him, but turned, taking the target in her sights, obliging.
She felt a slow breeze against her skin and noted the damp, humid air along with the slight elevation of her target. She adjusted her aim in accordance and prepared for the shot as she had with the first. Between heartbeats, she squeezed the trigger.
She turned to face Dirk and saw him staring out across the distance with his binoculars. He chuckled and lowered the binoculars, turning to her and shaking his head. ?If you can shoot this well without remembering any of your training, when you regain your memory, I?m going to be working for you.?
She smiled and asked, ?So I did well?? knowing that she had, but wanting him to give her another verbal confirmation.
?You did better
