bought the previous night, looking over to Dirk who was sitting at the table with a laptop. She approached him and he turned to her, smiling sweetly. She was grateful that he wasn?t so, how would she describe Fritz? Stiff? Dirk seemed to be more easy-going than the other wolf.
She smiled back and in a low voice, she said, ?I have stitches behind my ear. How am I going to have them taken out??
?I?ll take them out for you,? he offered.
She shook her head, ?No offense, but you aren?t a medical professional are you??
He laughed, ?No, but I?ve removed my fair share of stitches. Besides, I?m sure the wound has healed by now and you really need to get them out.?
She hesitated when he stood and moved to look at them, but then stopped and allowed him to. ?Yep, those stitches need to come out.?
He walked across the room and pulled a first aid kit from a bag that was thrown over the arm of a chair. He placed it on the bed and patted the mattress, asking her to sit down. She reluctantly did as he asked and watched as he opened the tin box and began pulling things from inside it. He grabbed a piece of gauze and took it to the bathroom. She could see him standing at the sink testing the temperature of the water, apparently waiting for it to get hot, then soaked the gauze under it and returned to the room.
He kneeled down on the floor, next to the bed and said, ?Why don?t you lie down??
She lie on the bed as he?d asked and bit her lip, worried that he didn?t know what he was doing.
?Don?t worry, I promise to be gentle. I?d never hurt you,? he offered.
She turned her head slightly so that she could see his face and the look in his eye told her that he was being genuine. He was a Delta, the fourth wolf in command in his pack, it was in his nature to protect and care for the pack.
She wondered if her memory was slowing returning to her. She could clearly recall some of the facts of pack life. Had that been a small breakthrough or had she just not thought of the information until now? All the thoughts in her head seemed to be foggy and she wasn?t able to distinguish fact from fiction and new knowledge from what she?d already known.
?The warm compress will help to soften the skin around the stitches and they?ll come out easier.? Dirk whispered as he placed the gauze on her scalp.
After allowing the warmth to soak into her skin for a couple minutes, he pulled a pair of scissors from the box and as he moved them to her head, she closed her eyes tightly.
?It?s okay Jane. I?m not going to hurt you. I mean it.?
She relaxed a bit, but not completely. She heard the scissors snip and with her wolf hearing, the sound was amplified, almost echoing in her ear. She didn?t feel anything though. In less than a minute, he placed the scissors down on the bed and pulled a pair of tweezers from the box. She closed her eyes, gritting her teeth again as she awaited him to pull the stitches out, but in no time, he placed the tweezers down as well and said, ?All finished.?
She sat up slowly and looked down at him. ?I didn?t feel a thing.?
He smirked and replied, ?I told you I wouldn?t hurt you.?
She smiled at how attentive he was and at that moment, she realized what she needed. The empty feeling inside her was because she?d lost her memory, because she?d lost her pack, but mostly because she hadn?t found her mate. That was the biggest piece of her that was missing.
She stared into Dirk?s kind eyes and hoped that when she finally found the mate she was searching for, he?d be half as amiable as Dirk.
She bit her lip, wanting to question him more about mates but decided against it. She couldn?t recall what the signs were, but she knew that she?d recognize her mate when she met him.
Fritz opened the door to their room and stepped inside. She hadn?t even realized he was missing. How was that even possible? The man was
scary, for lack of a better word, and part of her quivered every time he looked at her. The ease of tension in the room should have been obvious, but somehow, she?d missed it.
She watched
