you how to get there.?
Dirk?s stomach churned over the fact that he was allowing this woman to so openly flirt with him, but he schooled his face, telling himself that he needed to do anything necessary to find Jane. He smiled at her and replied, ?Well, I have somewhere else I have to be, but if you could give me directions maybe I could meet you there when you get off.?
She grinned at him and he knew by the look on her face that she was expecting more than just a tour of the orchard. ?It?s not hard at all to find, you just follow the road south and you?ll see it as you?re leaving town.?
Dirk nodded his head to her and said, ?Okay. That sounds great.? He waited a moment, then cursed and said, ?I think I actually have another appointment this afternoon. Are you free tomorrow??
The girl nodded, ?Yes, I?m off tomorrow.?
?Could you meet me here at noon?? he asked.
?Sure,? she shrugged, ?any time you?d like.?
?Okay, see you at noon tomorrow.?
Dirk winked at her then left the restaurant. He thought he was going to vomit after what he?d just done. It wasn?t in the nature of males of his kind to flirt with any women other than their mate. Some males, regardless of wolf law, do have relations with human women, but Dirk was one in the group that avoided them, waiting for their mate.
He felt a pang of guilt at the thought that the woman would be here waiting for him tomorrow only to be stood up, but it was to her own benefit. He couldn?t have a human traipsing through the orchard with him if there were other wolves in the area. So he?d made false plans to meet her tomorrow when he knew that, hopefully, he?d be gone by then.
He started down the street not even realizing that he?d left his coffee sit outside the restaurant. It was all he could do to keep from transforming and running through the streets, but he couldn?t do that with humans around and he couldn?t really run down the street either. No, he couldn?t draw any unnecessary attention to himself.
He pulled his phone out of his bag and dialed Fritz?s number. It was answered after only two rings. ?Delta, I?ve been trying to call you.?
?I found her. I?m in a town outside of Richmond called Chesterfield. I think she?s being held in an old orchard house.?
?I?m about two hours from there. I?ll get the men together and I?ll be there as soon as I can.?
?Okay, Beta. I?m going to stake out the area. Call me when you get close.?
?Be careful Dirk,? his Beta said.
Chapter 26
Dirk stalked around all of the old houses in the orchard trying to detect any recent scents. He?d hoped that he may scent Jane, but so far he hadn?t. All of the houses he?d checked so far were uninhabited and seemed to have been for quite some time.
The property was much larger than he had expected and of course he was slow moving, being sure that he wasn?t spotted in case someone was watching. He hadn?t seen anyone thus far, but if Jane?s captor was as intelligent as he suspected, then his men would be trained well. The man was smart enough not to have his own picture on the local papers, and probably thought that no one would notice one of the other men. Or maybe he was even smarter than he had thought and it was a ploy, just in case he found himself somehow cornered, he could set up the other man to take the fall. Dirk wasn?t certain which was the case, but he wasn?t taking chances. He was using every stealth training technique he?d ever learned.
He remembered from the day that he and Jane had been ambushed that their attackers had no scent. Did that mean that he wouldn?t be able to detect them even if they were right beside him hiding in the brush? He shook his head as he wondered how they?d accomplished that. In all the centuries he?d lived, he?d never heard of such things.
Just as he was thinking about the odd wolves with no scents, three men jumped out of nowhere and two of them had pistols aimed at him. His mind raced to find a way out of the dilemma, but as every possible scenario played out, none of them resulted in his escape. Hoping that they would lead him to Jane, he decided
