assumed the drugs the hospital staff had given her had sedated the animal as well because it wasn?t as strong the day before as it was now. Today, she could feel the animal and sense its emotions.
When they were finally boarding the plane, two of their seats were side by side and the third seat was a few rows back. Jane took the window seat and turned to see Fritz standing behind her. A growl rose in her throat at the idea of spending the trip next to the gloomy man and she had to suck in a breath of air to keep the sound from coming out. It hadn?t been her, it was her wolf that had growled. Apparently the creature didn?t like Fritz and she?d been unsuccessful at hiding the noise because a low growl rumbled in her ears. Then she realized that the noise hadn?t been her after all. Fritz stepped to the side and she caught a glimpse of Dirk who was trying to hide the slightly longer canines erupting from his gums. She watched the exchange between the two men as Dirk hid his mouth and dropped his gaze, then Fritz, who eyed him warily, pointed to the empty seat and said, ?You sit with the girl.?
Chapter 6
Dirk sat down as he was told and Fritz moved on back to the other seat. Jane felt her tension ease as he moved away. He certainly was a powerful wolf. It was no wonder the Alpha had put him in the position of Beta.
She turned to Dirk and watched as he slouched down into the seat, getting comfortable for the long ride to Germany. She whispered as quietly as possible, ?Why were you growling at Fritz??
He shrugged and whispered back, ?Apparently my wolf has taken it upon himself to guard you and didn?t like the idea of Fritz taking over his task. Damn thing is going to get me in trouble. He?s never protested the orders of authority before and I?ve never battled him to behave since I was a teenager.?
?My wolf didn?t want to be next to Fritz,? she admitted. ?I think he intimidates her.?
?Fritz tends to have that effect.? Dirk chuckled.
Jane smiled and slumped in the seat. ?What is the rest of your pack like??
Dirk?s brows came together and he replied, ?Well, you?re soon to find that our pack isn?t quite the traditional pack. Many of the wolves in our pack are like Fritz. We all have a job to do and we pride ourselves in performing those jobs.?
Jane stared down at her hands wondering what he meant. She couldn?t remember what it had been like in her pack and didn?t even know what traditional pack life was like.
Dirk must have sensed her uncertainty because he continued, ?Don?t worry, you?ll fit in fine and everyone is friendly even though they are very job-oriented.?
Jane sighed, ?I wish I could remember what my pack was like.?
?Well, most packs manage a piece of territory and live a simple life. Our pack is like the peace-keepers among packs. We?re sort of like the military of the werewolf people.?
Jane perked up feeling excited, yet scared that she was heading into such an environment. ?What?s that like? What does your pack do??
?Well, we intervene and act as a mediator if any other packs begin battle over pack members or territory. We have pack members placed strategically in branches of the military, FBI, even the government in the US as well as other countries. Those wolves cover up incidents related to our kind and inform us of any other information we may need.?
Jane stared at him, unbelieving that their pack was so efficient to have members involved with the government.
Before she could reply, the airplane began to move and was soon in the air. As they reached a higher altitude, the change brought on a dull ache in the back of her head. She leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes, only to startle when she felt a hand on her arm. Her eyes opened and found Dirk leaning near her with his hand resting on her arm.
?Are you okay?? he whispered.
?Yes,? she nodded. ?My head just hurts a little.?
?You should try to sleep,? he replied. ?Then the trip won?t seem so long.?
Jane leaned back again and closed her eyes. Even if she couldn?t sleep, she should at least try to rest so that her head wouldn?t hurt so badly. She took a deep breath, wondering how she would get
