held hope that he would find her, but in the back of her mind, she knew that it wasn?t going to be easy.
Dirk flashed her a smile that made her heart skip a beat. She was so grateful that the information was revealing the real Dirk, the happy, loving Dirk that she knew, not the hollow of a man he?d become since she?d been taken.
?I need details of where you?re being held, Jane. Is it a house??
?I?m not sure. I assume so. I don?t know what other type of building would be so old.?
Dirk licked his lips as he thought once more and said, ?Explain it to me, what have you seen inside the house or from the house? Are there any windows??
She nodded, ?Yes, there is a small window, but it?s too high for me to see anything out of it.?
?Is it shaded like there are trees outside, or is it bright??
Jane took a breath as she thought about his question. ?I don?t think there are any trees in line with the window. It?s very bright early in the morning until into the afternoon when the sun moves around to the opposite side of the house.?
Dirk nodded. ?Can you see anything in the distance? Any mountains or anything?
She shook her head, ?No, only the sky.?
?What about the inside of the basement? Have you seen any drywall or insulation? I assume the basement is unfinished.?
Jane nodded, ?Yes, there isn?t any drywall or insulation that I?ve seen. The rafters are bare, exposing the plumbing lines and wiring.?
?What material was used for the plumbing?? Dirk questioned.
?Um, I?m not sure. I noticed that it makes a lot of noise when they use the water upstairs. The pipes bang and clang. They?re really rusted, I hoped that at some point when they turned on the water, one of the lines would burst and we?d get sprayed with some fresh water.?
?We?? Dirk asked with a raised brow.
She nodded again and her chest tightened at the thought of the other girl. ?There is another girl being held in the cell with me. She?d been imprisoned eleven days before they captured me.?
?Is she Mystiko-lykos??
?Yes. But like me, she didn?t remember. She didn?t know it until I told her.?
Dirk?s jaw flexed and Jane knew he was thinking over the information. ?I would bet that your histories are connected. That would be the approximate time that you were taken to the hospital.?
Jane shrugged, saddened that the other girl?s fate may be her fault.
Dirk sighed and asked, ?What are the basement walls made of??
?Stone,? Jane replied. ?The walls are cracked and I?ve wondered more than once if the house would eventually collapse and make our prison our grave.?
Dirk pulled her to him and held her close as he whispered, ?I?ll get you out, Jane. I promise I?ll get you out.?
Jane relished in the feel of him against her and she felt her wolf stirring with their mate in such close proximity. Her wolf rumbled like a purring kitten and it made her smile. Her wolf wasn?t enjoying being caged either, however, the animal seemed to be handling the situation better than she was.
?Do you have any more questions?? she asked, smiling up at him.
?None that I can think of at the moment, why??
Jane answered his question with actions instead of words. She pulled herself back and let her wolf out. Her wolf leaped to the surface as she transformed and shook its fur like a wet dog.
Dirk smiled at her and in an instant, he was gone and his wolf had taken his place. Their clothes lie together in a pile on the sand and Jane stared at them a moment, feeling the intimacy in something that wouldn?t hold much meaning to most.
Jane?s wolf crouched down and as Dirk approached, she pounced, leaping at him, then dodging him as he jumped back at her. She sprinted over the beach and noted how difficult it was to run in the sand. If only they?d been in a forest.
She stumbled as the world went dark and the sand became tall grass full of chirping crickets. She looked up at the moon and felt its presence return some of her hope of the future. She wasn?t sure why, but knowing that the moon held so much meaning to her kind, making so many seemingly impossible things possible, made her situation seem a little less hopeless.
Dirk caught up to her and they ran side by side, frolicking over the forest floor, simply enjoying the
