we’d soon have to talk about again.
I turned my head after kissing Ira’s forehead to look at Rooney, and when she looked up at me, I smiled to assure her that everything would turn out right.
“We’ll be okay, Rooney. It’s just a small bump in the road,” I whispered.
Chapter Thirty-Two
Rooney
The first sight when I woke up the next morning was of Wells and Ira cuddled up next to me, with Ira not on his chest but between the two of us on the mattress now.
I noticed my hand on Ira’s back was covered by Wells’s, and when I looked at it, my heart stung without a warning.
Something felt so right, but after last night, I still had an unsure feeling inside of me.
We hadn’t talked it out yet, but for Ira’s sake, we couldn’t continue our argument.
A smile tugged at my lips as Wells’s hand squeezed mine and his fingers slid through mine, making it feel as if nothing was wrong at all.
“Good morning,” he whispered in a raspy voice, making me look up into his face again.
“Good morning,” I whispered back.
His other arm was underneath my neck, keeping me close while his hand cupped my head and his fingers pushed into my hair.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, studying me closely.
“Good, I think. You?”
He nodded, looking down at Ira who was now moving next to us. Though, he didn’t wake up.
“I’m sorry about last night, Rooney. I shouldn’t have pushed you. I think we both still need to reflect on things,” he said, keeping his voice low.
I nodded, agreeing with him.
“But that doesn’t mean anything bad, you know?”
No, it didn’t. But opening up about our feelings was so damn hard that it started to bother me the more I mentioned it.
“I guess we both struggle with the same problem,” I told him, pressing my lips into a thin line.
“Yeah, we do. But we’ll figure it out, all right? Maybe not now, but we can’t keep this up for much longer,” he said.
I agreed, so I nodded and leaned closer to him to kiss his lips without getting in Ira’s way.
Wells lifted his hand from mine to my cheek and kissed me back gently before he broke it again to look into my eyes again.
“Let’s push those thoughts aside and have a great weekend. Ira’s loving it here, and I don’t wanna ruin it for him.”
“I know,” I said, smiling at him and looking back down to see Ira move again.
He didn’t need to ask me if I was okay with Ira sleeping with us because this was a step closer to knowing that he kept trusting me around his son, and Ira was comfortable enough to sleep next to me.
The thoughts from last night came back again, making me wonder that if Wells didn’t want anything serious, why would he let it go as far as letting Ira sleep in one bed with us?
Something didn’t make a lot of sense, but, hell…I had to stop overthinking.
I was confusing myself.
“Good morning, buddy. Did you have a good night?” Wells asked as Ira rubbed his eyes with his fists, and I smiled as he looked even cuter than usual.
Ira nodded and then stretched before turning onto his back. “Can we feed the animals?” he asked, his little voice soft.
Wells chuckled and brushed through Ira’s hair. “We’ll have to eat breakfast first, hm?”
“Okay. Hi, Rooney,” he then said as he turned his head to look at me.
I smiled and couldn’t help a soft laugh. “Hey, little man. Are you excited for today?” I asked.
Safe to say he was comfortable between Wells and me.
“Yes, I am. Can we ride on the horses too?”
“Sounds like a good idea. I know a nice place where the horses like to go as well,” I told him. “We might even see clowns riding on bulls today,” I added, knowing Mom and Dad did a show for their guests every Saturday.
Wells chuckled, and I frowned at him. “Please don’t make fun of it,” I said in a serious tone, but he knew I didn’t mean it.
Sure, seeing my parents dressed as clowns wasn’t something I was proud of, but that way he got to know my parents and how they really were.
Dad wasn’t as stern as he seemed last night, and he put on a façade to come off like a bad guy to scare off Wells.
Luckily, Wells dealt with him better than expected.
“Are they good clowns?” Ira asked, worry filling his eyes.
“Of course they are, buddy,” Wells
