“I love you so much, Fin.”
Fin eased down and kissed his lips as gently as he could. “I don’t ever want to be without you—without this.”
“Me either. But...” Ferdinand wiggled around. “Let me up. I want to show you something.”
With a reluctant sigh, Finley complied. His softening cock popped out of Finley’s gentle hold, and then Finley rolled over to his back. “Show me what?”
Ferdinand stood up, his body every bit as glorious as it had been before they had sex, and if anything, a bit more, but as he watched, Ferdinand started glowing. His body was sheathed in a golden light. Then in a flash, Ferdinand’s feet came off the ground. He stretched his arms out in front of him and lifted his head. Then his body seemed to expand three times larger than it had been.
Finley sat up and watched in disbelief as Ferdinand blasted into what Ferdinand thought would be a million pieces. He covered his eyes, but when he looked back, a golden deer stood in front of him where Ferdinand had been. “Ferd? Is that you?”
The deer nodded his head up and down. He even had a small rack with about four tines, and the two at the top were split. His eyes were big and brown, but when Finley crawled closer, he could see they held the same depth and intelligence of Ferdinand. “How the hell is this possible?” He stood up and rubbed his hands up Ferdinand’s flank. “I guess if you could be a mouse and a person and none of these things...”
Ferdinand leaned into him, pressing his body against Finley.
“I love you, too, Ferd. This is amazing.” He wrapped his arms around Ferdinand’s thick neck. “This makes me incredibly happy.”
Epilogue: Ferdinand
Ferdinand sat in the grassy field next to Alana. A riot of color from the summer flowers spread out around them. She dropped her head in his lap, and he scratched behind her ears. “I love your brother very much.”
Alana made a soft, mewling noise. He hoped that meant she was happy about it. Ferdinand still couldn’t interpret the deer language well. He could shift into one easily, but it was more like a costume—it didn’t make him a real deer. He’d try like hell to learn, though. He wanted to be everything for Finley.
They waited in the sunshine while Finley and Donner spoke with the wolf representative. He’d come to tell them that the wolves’ civil war had ended. They had executed most of the old regime, including the last of Pritchard’s followers and all of Brayton’s crew. The birds had told them hours earlier, but this visit made it official. The war was over.
Ferdinand sighed and reclined in the grass. He had once thought that if the war ended, he would be of no use and would have to move on, but he had been wrong. His use had become a much bigger thing. And made him much happier.
He started dozing off in the heat of the sun, but not for long. Soon Finley joined him. That was all that mattered to Ferdinand. Not the war. Not what he was used for. Not time, or what had happened to change him. Only Finley’s happiness.
“Come on, Ferd. It’s too hot here. Let’s go jump in the pond.”
Ferdinand got to his feet and shifted beside Finley, who also shifted. As deer, they strolled through the woods to their favorite swimming hole. As deer, they were mates. Accepted and loved. They had missed the rut this season, but perhaps the next, they’d try for babies, because despite Finley’s protests, Ferdinand knew he wanted them, and Ferdinand would do anything to make it happen.
