he telling the truth?
“She thought I was obsessed with finding out what happened to the Hart’s and my dad. I was the one that gave her the information to write those articles. No one wanted to take it seriously, but I know something shady went down. I just know it.”
“Gordon,” I spoke gently. “This doesn’t sound healthy. You need to let it go.”
“I will never let it go.” He shouted angrily. “Just because you decided to slut it up with Wade, you want to defend him, but he and Henry are scum.”
“How dare you talk to me like that?” I was angry now and suddenly I realized that Gordon had never been genuine. It had all been an act.
“You were using me weren’t you? You never really cared about being my friend, did you? You just wanted access to Wade.” As I said the words I realized they were true. “It was all an act.”
“It wasn’t an act.” Gordon’s voice cracked and he looked at me with sad eyes. “Please believe that, Savannah.” He sighed. “I’m sorry for calling you a slut.”
“Why should I believe that?” I gripped the side of the door as he seemed to be driving even faster and now I was getting frightened. “Why are you driving so fast?”
“I’m just trying to get you somewhere. I want to show you something.” He turned a corner and slowed down slightly. “I know you might not believe me now, but I care about you, Savannah, you’re my first real friend.” He was silent for a few seconds and then I heard him sniffling. I looked to the side and I could see that he was crying, silent ugly tears and his body was shaking. “You don’t know what it’s like.” He sobbed. “My mom had an affair with my dad and my dad didn’t give two shits about my mom or me. He never even saw me. I called him every year on his birthday, ever since I was ten. I thought he just didn’t have my number. I thought he hated my mom and didn’t want to see me, but that wasn’t it. He just didn’t care about me. He didn’t care to meet me. He didn’t care if I was alive or dead. When I was fifteen, I had heart surgery. I thought he’d come. I nearly died, but he didn’t even call.” The pain in his voice made my heart break. “You forgive Wade for being a jerk to you because he’s hurt that his mom treated his dad badly, but he always knew his dad loved him and he has his brother. I have no one, Savannah. I have no one. My mom died, my dad died, and I was left with nothing. I wanted to meet my brothers. I wanted to belong. I just wanted someone. And I wanted answers.”
“Why didn’t you try and meet Wade?” I sighed as I rubbed my arms to stop my body from shaking. “Why didn’t you go to his house and tell him you were his brother?”
“Because I didn’t want him to think that I was there for money. I never wanted money. I just wanted a family. I just wanted to belong. My whole life...” He stopped then and slammed his fists against the wheel. “You don’t understand, I’ve just never been enough.”
“You’ve been enough to me, Gordon. You’ve always been enough. You’ve been a good friend to me. You’re friendly, you’re talented, oh so talented.” I could hear myself crying as well. “You could be a huge star. You’re one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. I think I told you that when we first met.”
“It’s not enough, don’t you get it? I’m not good looking enough, not rich enough, not personable enough. I’m just never enough.” He shouted. “I went to Los Angeles, you know. I don’t like to tell people, but I went to the City of Angels. It was full of evil bastards who just wanted to steal your dreams. I never got one callback.” He sounded so sad that I just wanted to pull him into my arms.
“I’m sorry, Gordon.” I realized now that while his intentions in the beginning may not have been the purest, he hadn’t been lying about our friendship, he was just a broken soul. A heartbroken, lost, broken soul. “I believe in you, you know. Don’t give up.”
“Do you forgive me?” He looked to the side, a look of hope on his face. “Are we
