at me with a questioning look and I gave her a reassuring smile. It was the best I could do in that moment. I was close to crumbling.
“I will have some as well, thanks.” I sat back down and waited for Henry to hand me a glass. When he handed it to me, I took a small sip and then moaned. “Wow, this is absolutely amazing. What is it?”
“This is a Pomerol, Bordeaux.” Henry smiled and took a sip. “Aw, yes, one of my favorites. This is a 2011 bottle from Petrus.” He said as if I’d ever heard of the company before in my life.
“We should get a couple of bottles.” Lucy grinned at me. “I wonder if they have them at Whole Foods or Trader Joes.”
“They don’t.” Wade smirked. “A bottle will set you back about thirty five hundred dollars.”
“Thirty five dollars?” Lucy questioned him.
“You wish.” He laughed. “Three thousand five hundred dollars.”
“Oh.” She laughed. “Yeah, I guess we won’t be buying any bottles.”
“That’s an expensive bottle of wine.” I sipped it a little slower this time. “But now I understand the saying you get what you pay for.”
“Well, this one pairs perfectly with the meat.” Wade beamed as he sat back down. “Now let’s enjoy our dinner.”
“Yes boss.” I laughed as I cut into my meat and continued eating. There was a comfortable silence around the table as we all enjoyed the meal. To anyone looking in from the outside we most probably looked like two happy couples enjoying a nice dinner together. But outside eyes couldn’t feel the tension in the air that was building up with every second. I felt like I could cut it with a knife and I almost groaned out loud as Lucy started talking again.
“So have you guys met Savannah’s friend, Gordon?” She asked as she finished up the remains of the Cesar salad on her plate.”
“No, I’ve heard about him a lot though.” Wade sat back and then poured everyone some more wine. “Do you like him?”
“I haven’t gotten to meet him yet.” Lucy said. “But Savannah tells me he looks a lot like you guys. And I was wondering if he might be an unknown brother.”
“What?” Wade’s eyes flew to mine and his eyes narrowed. “You never told me that.”
“Told you what?” I muttered, furious at Lucy. How dare she spurt that out?
“So do you think that he could be your brother?” She prodded and then looked at Henry. “What do you think?”
“What do I think?” He held his wine glass in his hand and swirled the liquid around for a few seconds. “I think I’d have to ask my dad if he sired another child for me to know the answer, but seeing as our dad is dead, that will be kinda hard.”
“That’s enough, Henry.” Wade jumped up, his face furious and then he turned to Lucy and me. “I don’t know what you guys are playing at, but you both need to step back. Savannah, I told you that you can’t have friends here or your mutt and you disobeyed me. We’re going to have to talk about this later.”
“Oh Wade,” Lucy called out to him as he walked out of the room.
“Yes,” He snapped.
“Are you going to get rid of Savannah, just like you did with your last assistant?”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” His eyes narrowed.
“Why don’t you tell us?” She said in a low voice.
“Henry.” Wade barked at his brother. “Let’s go.” And with that he was gone. I looked at Lucy, who was grinning, her eyes afire with adrenaline.
“You really went and poked the bear, didn’t you?” Henry shook his head as he stood up and stared down at Lucy. “You’re a very dumb girl?”
“Am I really?” She glared up at him, looking even more beautiful than normal.
“Yes.” He stared at her for a few seconds. “And if I was a dumb man I’d kiss you right now.” He rubbed his lips and sighed as he straightened his back. “But, unfortunately for you, I’m not dumb.” And with that he turned around and left the room as well. I counted to five under my breath and then I exploded on Lucy.
“What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to get us kicked out?”
“Would that be so bad? Wade is a psycho.”
“He’s not a psycho.”
“Girl, I hate to say it, but whatever he’s hiding is huge.” She bit down on her lower lip. “He went from flirting and happy to explosive
