York Times has several investigative articles on him.”
“Oh yeah? What’s his name?”
“Not a him. A her. Her name was Misha Waterman.”
“Oh okay. So what happened?”
“Well, from what I can see, they never filed for bankruptcy.” She frowned. “Maybe I’ll email this reporter and see what she has to say.”
“I guess, but what does that have to do with me? Wade said he never should have hired me because I could ruin everything. What do I have to do with his dad nearly going bankrupt?” I sighed.
“Yeah, I don’t know. Have you seen any files incriminating Wade or Henry in any shady business dealings?”
“No.” I shook my head. “I mean, we can have a peek in his office and see if we find any files.” I froze as I thought of something. “Oh shit, Lucy, what if that was what Gordon was looking for? What if he’s not the illegitimate son, but a reporter?”
“Oooh, wow. Maybe.” Lucy’s eyes widened as she stared up at me. “Maybe that’s why he was asking about Wade’s net worth?”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t really make sense now. Ugh, I need to talk to him.”
“You really do.” She took another sipped and moaned. “This tastes so good. This is not two buck chuck from Trader Joes.” She made a sound akin to an orgasm and I laughed.
“I don’t even think Wade has been in a Trader Joes.” I took a sip as well. “Okay, so I guess my first bet is to try and talk to Gordon and then see what else we can find. There’s a lady that works in the cafe in the village, she’s always warning me about the Hart brothers. Maybe we can talk to her and see what she has to say.”
“It can’t hurt.” Lucy’s eyes were starting to narrow and then she started to yawn. I jumped up and smiled at her.
“Come on, sleepy head. Let’s get you to your room. I’m going to change the sheets while you shower.”
“Oh?”
“I think it’s best if you sleep in my room and I’ll sleep in Wade’s room.” I smiled and then rolled my eyes as she made sex noises. “He’s not there, so it’s not like anything will be happening.”
“I bet you wish it was though.”
“Maybe.” I winked and then whistled at Jolene to get off of the couch. “Come on, you two.” I said as I started to walk out of the room. “Tonight, we all need to get a lot of sleep and then tomorrow we can start afresh with this investigation.”
“Sounds good to me.” Lucy let out a bigger yawn. “Man, that’s the problem with wine. It always accelerates how tired I feel.”
“No worries, girl. We’ve already done a lot today and I’m just so happy that you came up to visit me. I’m really looking forward to showing you around Herne Hill and I can’t wait for you to meet Wade.”
“Trust me, girl, no one is more excited to meet this mystery boss of yours than I am.” Lucy linked arms with me and we sang one of our favorite Disney songs from, Beauty and the Beast as we walked down the corridor. As we got to my room, we heard the loud hooting of an owl and we both jumped and then laughed as we walked into the bedroom. Lucy headed to the bathroom and I started stripping the sheets so that I could change them.
It was then that the owl started hooting again and I felt my body shivering. I walked over to the window and looked out but all that greeted me was the night sky and some stars. What was out there in the woods? Was someone trying to mess with my head or was I letting my imagination run away with me? I didn’t have the answers to those questions, but one thing I did know was that I was more thankful than I’d ever been in my life that Lucy had come to stay with me.
Chapter 8
The sounds of silence greeted me as I woke up the next morning. I snuggled under the sheets and pressed my face against Wade’s pillow, taking in his essence and scent. I felt a little bit creepy doing that, but I loved the feeling of being close to him that it provided me. He wasn’t here, but that was almost better. I could almost pretend that this was a normal situation I was in and that Wade was a normal guy. Almost. And then because it was
