as I opened the Sparks app and turned my account back to Active. I updated my profile and exchanged the older pics for newer ones. And then I began to look through the prospects.
Rhea came in wrapped in a towel from her shower. “Ooh, are you on that app? See anyone cute?”
I groaned. “Not yet.”
“Well,” she said, pulling some pants on. “Don’t give up. Let us know if you find anyone awesome.” She tugged on a shirt and blew me a kiss before walking out. Why was everyone being so chipper and positive about this stupid app? I could not get on board with their attitudes.
Let’s just say I was feeling extremely picky and doing a whooole lot of swiping left. I swiped for a good hour, my hand going numb, switching sides, then switching back. I was swiping left so quickly that I nearly didn’t stop myself in time when I came across an absolutely gorgeous face. My whole body jolted at the sight of those dark eyes, waved-back dark hair, and cleft chin. The air in my lungs sputtered, making my heart go momentarily erratic.
Silas.
Here it was. He really did make an account.
I closed my eyes a second to compose myself. He was my friend. He had every right to date and seek happiness. It’s okay that he didn’t like me like that anymore. We were both in a bad place when we had our moment and our date. I should not feel so crazed at the sight of him on this dating app, right? I sucked in a deep breath until my chest felt tight, then exhaled it slowly. Then I allowed myself to look at his profile.
He only had the one picture. I’d never seen it before. He was more handsome than ever in casual clothes sitting on a grassy hill with people milling all around him. It looked like an outdoor concert or something. I stared at it for way, way too long. This was torture. Why was I doing this to myself?
Slowly, I scrolled through his facts. I knew all of them already. And then I got to his bio and couldn’t breathe as I began to read.
Pilot. Divorced. Unattached. No kids but want someday. Looking for something fun, yet meaningful. I prefer a relationship where we can laugh together one moment and tear each other’s clothes off the next. Both friends and lovers. I prefer a woman who is tenderhearted and honest. A woman who knows what she deserves and will not settle for less. A woman who’s willing to jump on a spontaneous flight to Paris. I gasped. A woman with an extensive knowledge of penis synonyms. And above all, she must have a killer resting bitch face.
I screamed and dropped my phone, covering my mouth, then screamed again as I leapt to my feet, “You guys!” My feet were prancing in place as my friends came running into the room, their faces expectant.
“Did you see it?” Willa yelled.
“I—!” I tried to speak. “He!” I pointed to the phone and Holly snatched it up.
She beamed and pointed the screen at the other girls. “She saw it! It’s Silas! Look!”
We all screamed, jumping up and down, hugging each other like I’d won the damn lottery. Rhea literally picked me up off my feet and spun me around with her energetic five-foot self.
“Wait!” Beth yelled. “Did you match?”
“What?” I asked.
“Girl,” Willa chided.
“Did you swipe right?” Holly asked.
“Oh,” I breathed. “Oh, my gosh. Give me my phone!” I made grabby hands.
Holly handed it over and I refreshed the screen. My finger hovered over his handsome profile picture. “Wait. What if he’s not talking about me? It could be a coincide—”
“Are you serious right now?” Holly screeched.
“Dude, dooo iiit,” Rhea urged.
GAH!
My friends gathered around me in a circle, our faces close. We went quiet. I held my breath, pressed my finger lightly to the screen, and swiped right. The golden banner burst into sight.
It’s a Match.
And the screen lit up with sparks.
As we all screamed like teeny-boppers at a boyband concert, I heard a bling.
Silas has sent you a message.
“Oh my gah!!” I opened it, my heart erratic.
Hello lovely. Looks like we’re in the same profession.
Holly gasped. “He’s acting like you’re meeting for the first time! This is too cute!”
I held the phone to my fluttering chest. “I can’t type in front of you guys. I’ll feel stupid.”
“Give the lovebirds some privacy!” Rhea said, pushing everyone away.
“Okay, but we better get the highlight reel later,” Willa
