I had no idea what I'd done to earn it. Apparently, I was famous in more places than just the Angel part of Orusian.
“Excellent. I do so hope you learned things that will make this much easier for both of us.” I flashed my teeth, twisting my smile into a warning. If I have a reputation, I might as well use it.
Port cleared his throat and adjusted his cloak before saying, “Yes, well, what seems to be the problem? This boy hasn't told me anything beyond telling me that I was needed.”
“That boy is Elite Grim Raster. As for why you are here, I had you called simply as a courtesy. I'm currently holding two Grims in connection with several crimes, but I'm confident more will be added momentarily. There are two other members of their Grouping that need to be found and held. Can you do that, or shall I?”
Port jerked, sniffing as he turned even more translucent. “Yes, we've been able to maintain order in this sector for longer than you've been alive, so I'm sure we can handle finding two of our own.”
I nodded and twirled, my cloak fluttering around my legs. When I laid my hand on the doorknob, I paused and looked back at Port. “Shall we find out what kind of crimes have been committed in your very orderly sector?”
He didn't answer, but when Kian snickered, Port glared at me. I didn't care if he liked me or not. He'd been the one who had failed to identify Bevan's killer, and he allowed those with specific names to feel untouchable.
When I pushed the door open, both Dal’s and Rin's heads snapped towards me. While Rin quickly shrunk, a glint entered Dal’s eyes. He seemed to puff up even more when his eyes searched the line of Reapers following behind me.
“Would you mind?” I asked Axton as I gestured to the pair we'd left tied to the chairs.
“Of course,” Axton murmured and passed me, removing the strips of cloth Trace had used to muzzle the pair.
“Investigator Port,” Dal gasped out the moment the gag fell away. “I'm so glad to see you. I want these Reapers detained. They've assaulted us and held us here against our will.”
I smiled as he continued to rant about what he wanted. Kian outright laughed, and even Trace chuckled.
“I'm afraid that is not possible, Grim Dal. You've been accused by an Investigator, and therefore, we must get this cleared up.” Port surprised me, keeping his voice neutral as he stuck with the rules.
Seeing no give in Port, Dal changed tactics, aiming his pitiful attempts to the only other Master in the room. “Master Laeru, you know me. You signed us up to volunteer, remember? Is this how we're to be repaid for trying to help? My father will not be happy to hear about this.”
Before Laeru could be drawn into things, I interjected, “Let's just hope that you'll be able to speak with your father after this. If I discover any evidence linking you to Earth, well, I hope you told him you loved him lately.”
As both Dal and Rin began shouting questions, I spun to find Port directly behind me. Laeru stood at his side, watching the whole thing with wide eyes.
I directed everyone, ready to move things along. “If Elite Grims Haffin and Raster could guard the door, that would be helpful. Liaison Michealson, would you begin a file for Grims Dal and Rin? Thank you. Grim Mannix, if you could assist us with keeping the accused still, I would appreciate that. Master Port, can you Harvest?”
Port shook his head. “Yes, I'm afraid not. I do have some other abilities that are similar, though, and I've been shown memories before.”
That made sense, because if he did have the ability, I would have expected him to use it during Bevan's death inquiry.
“I can bring you in with me. Just do not fight me when I enter your mind,” I instructed.
Everyone shifted around, taking their places. Only Laeru was left with nothing to do, so I asked if he would like to view the Harvesting. His eyes lit up.
“Oh, I would. It has been some time since I've been pulled into a viewing. In fact, I believe it was your father who was in charge at that—” Master Laeru babbled on, his words rushed.
He paused when I slipped my arm around his and began walking towards Dal.
He patted my hand and smiled. “Right, right. I'm sure you're eager to get
