the way over here to pick me up,” she remarks.
I follow her out, laughing.
Nobody at the office knows that I am currently on my way to a weekend away with my assistant. Neither do they know we have already had sex. Kissed several times. There are so many things that are inappropriate about this scenario that I don’t even wish to consider.
I hold the door open and Kim steps in.
“You know, traveling with someone can be very boring and cumbersome if you don’t really know them or get along with them,” she says as we push off in the direction of the airport.
“I think we got to know each other pretty well a few nights ago,” I reply, and she rolls her eyes.
“Is that your definition of getting to know someone?”
“Is there something in particular you would like to get to know about me?”
“Yes. I don’t think I know you at all, so that list goes on!” she remarks with a laugh.
“Okay, why don’t we start at an easy place. Everything you’ve heard about me. All those rumors, they are all true,” I say.
I look at her, and she’s biting down on her lip like she’s trying to hold back a laugh.
“I don’t think you really know what they say about you!”
“I’m pretty sure I do.”
“You’re forgetting that I hang out with a group of women in the cafeteria who love to talk about men. Especially celebrities. In their eyes, you are one of them.”
I chuckle as we zoom in the direction of the airport.
“So what’s the latest gossip? What have they been saying about me?”
She tips her head to one side and narrows her eyes like a villain would.
“Okay, here’s one. Apparently, you wrestled an alligator in Australia.”
She’s smiling when I look at her again. I shrug and she shakes her head.
“You really want me to believe that?” She is laughing now.
“You don’t think I can?”
Kim sighs, still chuckling. “I don’t want you to prove it to me either,” she says.
We are going to be flying in my private jet. Kim knows this because she is the one who arranged it. However, I can see the look of wonderment on her face when she steps into the luxurious confines of the plane.
I have been living this life a long time now, but I’d like to believe my feet haven’t flown that far off the ground that I’ve forgotten what it was like to come from humble beginnings. I guess you could say I came from one of the humblest of all.
I still remember what it was like when I got on a private jet for the first time. I stare at Kim as she looks around now, a little nervous but a little brave at the same time.
“You get used to it, and eventually, you stop noticing the little things,” I say as I sit down in my seat. “Like how my drink is waiting for me, with the exact number of ice cubes I like in my glass.” I hold my crystal glass of whisky up for her to see as she takes the seat across from me.
Since the flight staff was not aware of what Kim’s preferences are, she has been served orange juice in a tall, frosted glass.
She takes in a deep breath and looks out, nodding her head.
“You lead a very different life from mine. Do you think you’ve taken all this for granted?” she asks.
“No. I haven’t. It’s one of the reasons why I work so hard. I don’t want to lose what I’ve built. I’ve built everything myself. Worked hard to be where I am today.” The whisky tastes sharp and ice-cold as it travels down my throat.
I can’t take my eyes off how beautiful Kim looks as she sits by the window. The early morning sunshine is pouring through to light up her hair and illuminate her face.
“I’ve heard some rumors about how you grew up with a single mother, that you have a bit of a history. I’ve tried to not pay attention to any stories I can’t personally verify,” she replies.
“That is very noble of you, but most of it is true. As I said, most rumors about me are.”
She smiles, and the seatbelt signs come on. Our personal flight attendant comes over to check on us and make sure we’re doing okay. Then she leaves us alone as we take off. We stare at each other, smiling a little as we take off into the air. I’m not sure
