gone?
He put the car into gear and drove away from the building, and headed for Morgan’s apartment building. Would she have gone home already? But if she had, she would have certainly looked at all the missed calls on her phone and called him back. He didn’t believe she’d tell him that she loved him only to ignore his calls.
His twisting gut told him something wasn’t right. She could be in danger for all he knew.
As he drove, he went back over everything that had happened this morning. Their first suspect was Joslyn, and Morgan knew it. She was supposed to get that jacket from her coworker. So, maybe Morgan had gone somewhere with Joslyn. Yet, Thomas knew that Morgan could protect herself against a reed-thin, ditzy woman like Joslyn.
The ringing of his cell phone brought him out of his thoughts. He pressed the button on his steering wheel to activate the Bluetooth in his car. The call was coming from Cole. “Hey, what’s up?” Thomas asked.
“Because I’m such a good friend, I decided to do some checking on our favorite friend.”
Thomas rolled his eyes. “Let me guess. Are you talking about Garth?”
Cole laughed. “Who else would it be? Anyway, I drove by the idiot’s house, and I noticed Morgan’s motorcycle parked in the bushes.”
Thomas swore under his breath. “How close are you to his house now?”
“I’m still within a half-mile. Why?”
“Go back there and wait for me.”
“Do you think we’ll need weapons?”
Thomas’ chest clenched. If Morgan was doing what he thought she was doing... “Yes, but I have mine in my car.”
“We think alike, my friend. I’ll be there waiting.”
Thomas ended the call and quickly turned his car around. The Ferrari’s wheels squealed on the payment. A couple of cars swerved out of his way, but he made it through the commotion and took off, zipping in and out of traffic.
He pushed the button for his phone again and activated his voice command. “Call 911.”
“911, what is your emergency?”
“My girlfriend has been kidnapped. I’m heading there now.” He gave them the address before hanging up. Although he didn’t give them more information, he knew they’d send a squad car to Garth’s residence to check things out. At the moment, that was good enough for him. He just prayed they wouldn’t arrive too late. Greedy men like Garth were very dangerous.
TWENTY-SEVEN
Thomas slowed his sports car as he neared Garth’s place. Immediately, he spotted Cole’s truck, so he pulled up beside him, killed the engine, and jumped out. “Have you seen anything yet?” He crept closer to Cole who stood near Morgan’s bike along the tall bushes.
“Nothing. But I think,” he pointed to the west second-story window, “they are in that room. I see movements from time to time, but I haven’t seen any faces yet.”
Thomas tightened his hand around his Glock. “Let’s go find her.”
Cole nodded. The seriousness in his expression reassured Thomas that they were doing the right thing.
“Oh, before I forget,” Thomas said, “I called the police. They should be arriving soon.”
Cole glanced at him with a raised eyebrow. “Really? What did you tell them?”
“That Morgan was kidnapped.”
Cole shrugged. “That’s probably very close to the truth.”
“We’re dealing with idiots inside that house,” Thomas grumbled, “and idiots can’t think straight. I don’t even want to imagine what they’d do if Morgan fought back.”
“Hey.” Cole placed his hand on Thomas’ shoulder. “She’s going to be all right.”
Thomas gave his friend a sharp nod before continuing toward the house. He didn’t want to say anything about how his chest was so tight with worry right now that he might be the one to do something stupid if he discovered that Garth had harmed Morgan. Thomas had just found the woman he wanted to spend eternity with, he wasn’t about to let someone ruin that.
He didn’t want to break in the front door, and since the garage door was closed, he would have to sneak around back. Thankfully, Garth didn’t have a high-tech security system like the Powers men had. Maybe, just maybe, they could get inside without being noticed. After all, it was the middle of the day, and burglars didn’t usually come out until dark.
The two doors they found around back were locked. Breaking and entering sounded like a good idea, now, and he really didn’t care if he was arrested. Right now, all he thought about was saving Morgan.
“What are you thinking?” Cole asked in a low voice.
“About breaking the law. Why? What are your thoughts?”
Cole smiled. “The same.”
