a lie. She really did feel sick.
Thankfully, her boss let her leave, and it didn’t take long before she was on her bike speeding toward Thomas’ vineyard. The closer she came, the more excitement built inside her to where she almost couldn’t breathe.
She parked the bike and ran into the lobby, huffing and puffing like she’d ran instead of taken her motorcycle. She took off her helmet, but held onto it tightly. After all, she had to keep her hands occupied.
“Good afternoon,” Kitty greeted sweetly from behind the desk. But then recognition struck, and her lips pinched together in irritation. “Oh, it’s you.”
“Yes, I’m Morgan Foster. I was hoping... to speak with... Thomas Powers.” Heavens, she was going to pass out, she just knew it.
“Do you have an appointment?” the receptionist asked, glancing at her computer screen as if trying to ignore Morgan.
“No, but I know he’ll want to see me. I only need like five minutes of his time. He is here today, right?” Once she asked the question, she tried to remember if she noticed one of his many cars parked outside, but her mind was drawing a blank.
Nodding, Kitty pressed a button. “Tasha, a lady named Morgan Foster,” she said snarky, “is here to speak with Thomas, is he available?” She paused, listening on the other end. She rolled her eyes. “All right. Thanks.”
Morgan leaned up against the desk, more than a little irritated about the way Kitty was treating her. Then again, she had been rather rude to the receptionist that first day she and Joslyn came to see Darion.
“Tasha will be down in a minute.” She smiled to show off her bleached teeth.
“Thank you.” Morgan stepped away from the desk and leaned up against the nearest wall. Her insides were twisting from nerves, and her legs threatened to crumble her to the floor.
To pass the time, she glanced at Kitty a few times. The secretary had answered a few calls, but the blonde bombshell’s main job was to look through fashion magazines. She had a whole stack of them on her desk.
“Morgan,” a sweet voice said as she heard the clicking of heels on the tile.
Morgan turned to see the woman who she met a week ago greet her.
“Did Thomas know you were stopping by?” Tasha asked.
Morgan pulled away from the wall. “No, but I really need to speak with him. It will only take about five minutes.”
“Thomas is in a phone meeting right now with his father. Come upstairs. You can wait for him in his office. Their phone meeting should be coming to a close in a few minutes.”
“Oh, thank you,” Morgan said happily.
She followed Tasha up the stairs. They passed the conference room where she and Joslyn first met Darion Powers. Memories resurfaced, and she smiled. Across the hall were big oak doors with a name plaque on the outside that read Darion Powers. The doors were closed so that was probably where the meeting was being held. A few more doors down the hall was another set of oak doors. These doors were already opened slightly, and the name Thomas Powers was on the plaque.
Tasha opened the door more and invited her inside. The room was large with a half-moon desk, almost like the one at his home, sitting in the middle of the room. A large leather couch sat in one corner while a few other soft chairs were placed around the room. Everything appeared to be very professional, even the mini-bar near the window.
“Thomas will be here shortly,” Tasha said. “Make yourself at home.”
Tasha left Morgan alone in the room, but she couldn’t sit still. Instead, she paced the floor as her mind pieced together what had happened this morning. She prayed Thomas would be able to help her.
Her pacing slowed as she looked at all the pictures of the vineyards, and also of mansions. It surprised her that he didn’t have any pictures hanging on his wall of sports cars.
She moved to his desk and sat on his cushioned executive chair. Smiling, she nodded. She needed to get her a comfortable chair like this one for her office. Of course, the rich could afford this type of stuff. She couldn’t.
Her gaze moved to the day planner opened on his desk. It was filled with appointments. It seemed the carefree billionaire was finally starting to take his business responsibilities serious.
She stopped her exploration of his desk and rested her focus on the big, padded manila envelope sitting in a
