her. And, he wanted it done now!
MORGAN CLICKED OFF her phone after talking to Thomas. His news unsettled her, and she didn’t know what to think.
Why would Joslyn start fires? The woman had a good job working for the paper. She was their top reporter – even if Morgan had reservations about some of the questions the woman asked and thought she could do better.
All morning, Morgan had been hearing her coworkers throw out compliments to Joslyn about her interview and the photos that were taken at the Powers’ fire yesterday. Morgan had only taken the after shots, but apparently, Joslyn clicked a few pics on her camera, and everyone thought she was Nobel Prize worthy. Morgan rolled her eyes. Sometimes she wondered why she stayed in a job like this and worked for people who didn’t appreciate her hard work.
She moved away from her desk and slowly walked toward Joslyn’s cubicle. Her coworker was suspiciously missing. Then again, Joslyn didn’t stay at her desk very much during the day. That was what Morgan did.
Making sure not to draw too much attention, she stepped closer to Joslyn’s cubicle, and surveyed the inside. Usually, Joslyn hung up her jackets on a coatrack, but because it was summer, Morgan doubted the reporter would wear a jacket at all. And yet, the bead Thomas found looked identical to the ones on Joslyn’s garment. Unfortunately, the jacket wasn’t anywhere out in the open, and Morgan wasn’t about to snoop through the woman’s drawers on the slim chance that the jacket would be in there.
Morgan sighed and leaned against the cubicle. If only she could remember what Joslyn was wearing yesterday. Morgan’s mind wasn’t on her coworker’s fashion statement, but on Thomas, the burned field, and Darion.
When she’d been talking to Thomas a few minutes ago, he’d mentioned sending her some pictures of the winery’s security footage to turn into the magazine. She quickly pulled out her phone and sent a text to Thomas.
Send me pictures of the security footage that you have, especially pictures of the people who had gathered around to gawk.
As she took a step away from the cubicle, Joslyn’s high-heeled shoes clicked on the tiled floor, sounding like the pounding of a hammer. Morgan rubbed her forehead. She must still have a slight headache from her exciting morning. It wasn’t every day a man told her he loved her.
She had to admit, though, his confession surprised her. For years, she’d fantasized about the moment when a man would declare his love, but not once did she ever think it would be next to a charred vineyard with people clearing up the burned field. And yet, it was so very different and spur of the moment, that it caught her off guard. The moment was actually perfect, and one she’d never forget.
“Are you waiting for me?” Joslyn said in an overly cheerful tone.
“Uh... sure.” She couldn’t think of an excuse to be waiting by Joslyn’s desk. “I have a date tonight, and I wondered if I could borrow that cute beaded jacket of yours.” After she’d said it, she realized it was a brilliant idea.
Joslyn blinked with wide eyes. “My beaded jacket? Why? That’s not the kind of jacket you wear. You’re more into leather.”
Morgan nodded, knowing Joslyn had a good point. “I know, but I’m going out with Thomas, and well... I wanted to look different. You know, like a normal woman.”
Joslyn laughed and shook her head. “Morgan, you’ll never look like a normal woman. You’re too much tomboy for that.”
Morgan didn’t want to explain to her coworker some of the fancy gowns she’d been wearing since meeting Thomas. “True, but Thomas likes women who dress elegantly.”
Joslyn snorted on her laugh. “Then why is he going out with you and not me?”
The sarcastic tone in the woman’s voice made Morgan want to punch her since it was obvious the woman was still very jealous, but Morgan wouldn’t. Maybe that time would come later. “So, are you going to let me borrow it or not?”
Joslyn shook her head. “I can’t. It still has smoke-smell on it.”
Morgan hitched a breath. No... Joslyn couldn’t possibly have started the fire. “Why?”
Joslyn rolled her eyes. “Because that’s what I was wearing when I went to interview people and took pictures because someone wasn’t doing her job.”
Maybe that punch Morgan was dying to let loose would come sooner rather than later. “It’s because I was trying to help put out the fire, which is what you could
