headed south. If we’d had our guns, they wouldn’t have made it out of the lot.”
“Did you get the plates?”
“Sorry, Ethan. They left in the opposite direction from our position. The shooter had Chaos and Katrina pinned down on the side of her car.” Rock pointed to a beat-up, old sedan parked next to a patch of grass. “He was able to get her across the street about the time we heard sirens.”
“It wasn’t the Disciples,” Ghost said. “There may be another player we don’t know about.”
Rock shot another look around. “I agree. Or they were hired by the Disciples.”
“What about the Night Devils?” Ethan asked, looking at his oldest brother, Wrath. “Would they have sent people from another chapter to take revenge for the loss of the local one?”
“The Devils lost their local and national leadership. I doubt they’d chance retaliation so soon. I’ll ask Raider and Penny to dig deeper into the MC, but my gut tells me Ghost is right. There’s someone gunning for either Chaos or Katrina that we know nothing about. I’ll have them do some of their computer voodoo on that theory, too. Plus, I’ll speak with Grayson. We need CCTV footage of the area, Ethan. Any chance you can get us a copy?”
“It’s Geoff’s jurisdiction. If nothing else, he’ll probably allow you to review it after his team has had their chance. At some point, you may have to come clean about your roles. He already suspects, but if Grayson will allow you to give him more information on the Brethren, the chief might be even more accommodating. I know you had your reasons for keeping Chief Abernathy out of it.”
“The ex-chief was one dirty sonofabitch,” Wrangler growled. “Can’t say I’m sorry he’s dead.”
“Geoff’s nothing like Chuck. Think about it.” Ethan watched as one of his deputies made her way to him. “I need to speak with Vela. I’ll let you know what else I learn, and I’ll talk to Geoff about CCTV footage.”
As Ethan walked away, Officer Brownell, Chaos, Katrina, and Geoff emerged. The chief splintered off toward Ethan while the others continued toward them.
“I’m done with them for now,” Brownell said, sliding a tablet into a sleeve. “I appreciate your cooperation.”
Katrina clasped her hands together, lips thinning. “I hope you catch whoever shot at us. They could’ve hit anyone.”
“We’ll do all we can, Miss Snowden. The question remains, why were one of you the target? I’m hoping to get more information once we review the footage.”
Brow furrowed, Katrina cocked her head. “Footage?”
Brownell pointed to a couple cameras positioned above the lot. “There are units installed all over town. With luck, the footage will provide something useful. As will the bullet casings. I doubt whoever did this had time to clean up before leaving the area.”
Wrath had been thinking the same. “Footprints?”
Brownell shrugged. “The chances of that are slight. He may have been standing on the asphalt, and even if he wasn’t, the ground is too dry to allow much of an imprint. We’ll do all we can.”
“Thanks, Officer.” Wrath glanced around the group. “Not much we can do here. I’ll be following Katrina home.”
“I don’t need anyone following me,” she protested. “My house is just a few blocks away.”
“I’m still going to do it. Someone shot at you and Chaos, which means we aren’t taking any chances.”
Chaos took a step closer to Katrina. “I’ll follow her, Prez.”
Wrath shook his head, gaze narrowing. “I want you and Katrina separated. Wrangler, you’re to follow Chaos home.”
“Hell, Prez. I don’t need a damn babysitter.”
The corner of Wrath’s lip twitched. “The day you need a babysitter is the day you turn in your patch, Chaos. This is a precaution. I’d order it for anyone who comes under fire. Are you ready to go, Katrina?”
She glanced at the hospital. “Wish I knew more about Gunner’s status.”
“I’ll make certain to keep you informed. They’ve upgraded his condition, so he’s improving.”
Once again, Katrina found herself wondering about Wrath and the Brethren. She doubted the MC members she’d known would be so understanding. Something about Gunner and his club didn’t add up.
Before they could leave, Ethan jogged up, giving a brisk nod at Katrina. “Geoff and his people are going to review the footage first thing in the morning. He said to have Chaos and Katrina at the station around ten and he’ll go through it with them. I also told him another Brethren would be with them, which is fine. He doesn’t want a parade of you guys
