that?”
Anger at the threat rushed through her. “Hell yes. Let’s go.”
Stifling a chuckle, he didn’t release her from his hold. “On my go, Kat, and not before.”
A moment later, another short burst of bullets sprayed around the car, too close to ignore any longer. He lowered his mouth to her ear.
“One…two…three. Go, Kat.” His words were quiet but filled with command.
Keeping his body between hers and where he estimated the shooter to be hiding, he hauled her up, pushing her around the car and into the bushes. Chaos cursed the fact he’d been required to leave his weapons on his bike.
“Are you all right?” He turned Katrina to look at him, studying her face.
“Sore, angry, but yes, I’m fine. Who are they?”
Glancing behind him, Chaos shook his head. “I don’t know. Maybe the same people who tried to kill Gunner.”
“They tried to kill him?” Katrina almost shrieked.
Cursing himself for his stupidity, he placed a hand over her mouth. “Shush. We don’t want them to know where we are.”
Gripping his wrist, she pulled his hand away. “Answer me.”
“We’ll talk once we’re safe. Come on.” Grabbing her hand, he dashed across the street, running toward closed medical offices.
Chaos pulled out his phone at the same time sirens blared from several directions. Watching from their spot across the street, he dialed Rock’s number.
“You heard the shots?” Chaos asked.
“Yeah. We called the police. Our weapons are locked inside our trucks. Are you all right?”
“It was close, but we’re fine. I’ve got Katrina with me. We’re across the street, outside the medical offices. Same as you, I’m not armed.”
“Whoever shot at you is long gone and the place is crawling with cops. Ghost and I are on our way outside. Meet us in the hospital parking lot.”
“Rock and Ghost are waiting for us. Are you ready to head back?”
Katrina nodded. “We have to find whoever shot at us.”
“We are not doing anything, Kat. You’re going home after you give a statement to the police. In fact, I’m following you there. Don’t even consider arguing.”
“Why would they be after me, Gabe? I think you’re the one they were firing at. What did the Brethren do?”
“Not a damn thing,” he lied. “Whether it’s you or me doesn’t matter. You aren’t inserting yourself into trying to find the shooter. This isn’t who you are, Kat.”
“It didn’t used to be who you were, either.”
“You knew me when I was a kid with a father who didn’t give a damn about me. I became someone better after I left.” He pointed to his cut. “This is exactly who I am.”
Chaos guided Katrina across the street, keeping her tucked against his side.
They waited in the cover of the bushes until they saw Rock and Ghost speaking with one of the police officers. Approaching, Chaos grabbed Katrina’s hand, continuing his vigil as they joined them.
“This is Chaos and Katrina, a friend of Gunner’s,” Ghost said. “This is Officer Brownell.”
“Ghost and Rock say you’re the ones targeted by the shooter.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Chaos answered, keeping Katrina next to him.
“If you don’t mind, I need statements from each of you. We can go inside while the other officers clear the area.” Nodding at Rock and Ghost, she led them into the hospital, not noticing the arrival of her boss, Police Chief Geoff Bettencourt, followed by Wrath, Wrangler, and Ethan.
“What the hell happened?” Bettencourt counted three patrol cars plus a sheriff’s department SUV in the parking lot.
Ghost stepped closer. “One of our men, Chaos, walked Katrina Snowden to her car. They were here waiting for word on Gunner.”
Geoff glanced over his shoulder at the hospital entry. “I heard about what happened to him. Hope he’ll be all right.”
“They upgraded his condition. I doubt he’ll be in here more than a couple more days.” Ghost shot Wrath a look before continuing. “Officer Brownell is inside with Chaos and Kat now. Rock and I didn’t have a chance to talk to them about details.”
“I’ve got my people canvassing the area. I’ll go inside, see if we can get more details from Chaos and Miss Snowden.”
Waiting until Bettencourt went inside, Rock turned to Wrath. “We had to leave our weapons in our trucks, but we did get a glimpse of the shooter. Short, dressed in dark clothes, and wearing a ski mask. When the sirens started, he left the cover of the bushes to jump into a large, black or dark blue sedan.”
“With a driver?” Wrangler asked.
Rock nodded. “One shooter and a driver. They tore out of here and
