pinpoint what it was exactly. I hadn’t seen her in ten years, so our reunion shouldn’t be this hostile. I understood she had warranted dislike for me, but to hate me with this much hostility all these years later?
She looked like she wanted to rage a bit, but instead, she relented. “Fine. Let’s just get this goddamn night over with.”
She took a step to turn from me, but a quick thought occurred to me, and I needed to clear things up a bit. I grabbed her by her arm and pulled her towards me again. Peering down at her precious face, I said, “You’re walking out those front doors with me at the end of the night, Stems.”
She scoffed and I wanted to strangle her for it. “You think so, Will?”
God, it was going to feel like Heaven to break her.
“I know so,” I stated. “There’s no way I’m going to spend all evening introducing you to people as my date only to have you leave with someone else.”
Vicky looked at me and I could tell she wanted to argue with me just for the sake of arguing. Old habits did die hard. But she surprised me when she said, “Fine. I’ll leave with you, but that doesn’t mean we’re ending up at the same place at the end of the night, Will. I’m pretty sure I still don’t like you ten years later.”
I didn’t believe her.
“Bullshit, Stems,” I replied. “I think you like me just fine.”
Vicky cocked her head at me, and I didn’t miss the taunting lift of her lip. “You think so, huh?”
Before I could prove it by just kissing the fuck out of her in front of everyone, I caught notice of Bernard Willis coming out of the band area, and he wasn’t alone. He was with his gold-digging daughter, Crystal, and that wasn’t good. Crystal’s been after Damien’s dick for years now and the woman did not know how to take a hint. I needed to warn Dame.
I grabbed Vicky by her arm and started dragging her behind me. “Come on.”
“What the hell, Will?” she hissed. “I can walk, you know.”
“Just come on, Stems,” I hissed back.
“And quit calling me Stems,” she bit out. “It’s ridiculous.”
This made me stop to look at her. Before she could smack me, I leaned in and kissed her temple. “I can’t help it, Vicky,” I told her. “I saw you in that dress when we were 13-years-old, got a look at those legs, and that’s what I think of when I think of you.”
Her face blushed, but she shook it off and rolled her eyes. “Whatever,” she mumbled, however, she stopped fighting me when I started dragging her behind me again.
The journey to find Damien had been a rough one, what with clients calling to me left and right, wanting to talk, but I finally found him and Fiona near the restrooms outside the bar area. I glanced around the room to see where Bernard and Crystal had made off to, but I couldn’t see them.
I walked up and eyed Damien. “Hey, Dame,” I said glancing at Fiona really quickly. “I just ran into Bernard Willis,” I lied, but I wanted Damien to know that Bernard was indeed here. “He’s hoping to congratulate you on our West Coast success.” Bernard Willis has been a long-time client of ours, and we respected him professionally, no doubt. But personally, the man left a lot to be desired. He wasn’t outright sleazy, but he left a trail of slime behind sometimes. I wanted to prepare Damien because Bernard was no help where his daughter was concerned.
“I have to go to the restroom and I’m taking Fee with me,” Vicky announced. I just stood there as she grabbed Fiona, and off they went.
Now, Damien was my best friend and business partner, but my warning was for me just as much as it was for him. I wanted Vicky in my bed tonight and Crystal hitting on Damien could ruin that for me.
Oh, I knew Vicky was claiming that she wasn’t interested, but I’d bet my left nut that she was. We had unfinished high school business to get to. I had wanted her in high school, but she had been in love with Ben Lester and would never have cheated on him.
Well, she’s not in love with the fucker now.
