but Levi gives me a look that tells me I should have a say.
“Okay, thank you. Creek and I will find them now, while you explain the rest of your plans to Levi.” I take Creek’s hand and search the crowd. I spot Nate, and we head towards them in the back far corner.
Apparently, not having an Angel with us is a disadvantage as we elbow our way through the people in the room. “Oh Remy, Creek! There you are! What a day.”
Maddie pulls us in for a hug and fusses over us for a few minutes, I indulge her because I know this wouldn’t have been possible without her help.
“How is my dad?” I look to Nate who looks saddened.
“He’s not exactly taking this all very well. Obviously, he was aware of what happened all those years ago, so he could still be punished, depending on who the new guild Elder is. Speaking of you both need to vote.”
“Is there a clear majority in the guild?” I ask, and they both nod.
“Then two votes aren’t going to make a difference. Creek, it’s up to you.” I motion to him, but he shakes his head.
“As long as the new Elder is on board with the new things we’ve put forward, I have no issues.”
“Oh I have a feeling they will be.” Maddie smiles coyly but quietens when Levi’s voice booms across the room. I hurry back to his side, Creek with me as Nasari takes center stage.
“Hunters, it has been a long day, but what we are here to pass judgment on has been a long time coming. First, I would like all guild representatives to come up on the stage, so you can be seen and heard clearly.” He pauses, waiting for the Hunters to move around the room. Maddie squeezes my hand as she moves past us by the side of the stage as they head on up.
“We shall reveal the vote, first off if you wish to unseat your current Elder by a show of hands.” I hold my breath, as one by one, twelve people raise their hands. All except Nasari’s guild, but I expected no less. He is newly appointed, and already very obviously on board with what we proposed to move forward with.
Holy shit, it’s really happening.
I let out a shaky breath and try not to cry. They all came around. I know it won’t have been unanimous, but every single guild has just publicly agreed to move forward with the change. I clench my hands and then shake them out, trying to get rid of some of the nervous excitement zipping under my skin.
“It is witnessed, before our very creator, the change in leadership is unanimous. I now invite one person from each guild to step forward and declare their new Elder nomination. If the person declines, we will move to the person with the next most votes.” Nasari’s voice is clear, and his happiness evident.
The first five guilds step forward and announce their new Elder nominees, who each accept graciously. Nate steps forward, and looks at me nervously.
Oh hell no.
“Our guild nominates Remington Bennett in place of our Elder.” The room goes silent, and I’m rooted to the spot. This was not the plan. It’s not something I even want.
“I’m sorry, but no. I can’t accept. It is an honor to be nominated, but I have a feeling I’ll get just as much done by not being on the council.”
“You are welcome to decline, Remy,” Nasari offers me a warm smile, and I can’t help but feel nervous.
“In which case, our second nomination, by just three votes, is Colt Bennett,” Nate’s voice rings out, and then I realize my brother, the fucking idiot, isn’t even here.
“Two minutes!” Creek calls out, his cell to his ear. I hear Colt answer, and roll my eyes so hard as I hear his stupid answer when he picks up.
“Man, shut the fuck up a second. I’m putting you on speaker,” Creek says then hits the screen. “Sorry, Dad. Can you repeat that?”
“Our guild nominates Colt Bennett in place of our Elder.”
“Are you fucking shitting me?” Colt’s voice crackles down the line, and I can’t help the laugh that breaks free.
“Colt, answer the god damn calling,” I hiss down the line, and he laughs.
“I accept! Sorry I’m not there! Catch you guys soon!” The line goes dead and I shake my head, noticing the crinkling of Nasari’s eyes as he tries not to laugh.
“There we have it
