said. “I feel so grown up.”
“And here I thought you being pregnant would make you feel grown up,” Tyler said.
“So what kind of windows do I get to pick out?” Mila asked.
“Hopefully the kind that open and shut,” I said.
“Wow, so funny,” Mila said, rolling her eyes.
“Daddy!”
Tyler turned and dropped to one knee as Lucy came racing through the restaurant.
I suddenly had a vision of the same happening to me with mine and Mila’s son.
“She’s all sugared up for you,” Anna said.
“Great,” Tyler said as he picked Lucy up. “Such a great help, Anna.”
“Anna, aren’t you going to say hello to Silas?” Mila asked with a devilish grin.
Anna glanced at me and started to blush.
“Hey, Anna,” I said. “How’s your day?”
“Oh, come on,” Tyler said. “You can’t keep getting starstruck around him. He lives here now. He’s not famous anymore. He’s all washed up.”
“Tyler!” Olivia snapped.
I laughed. “I’m the wash up who knocked up your sister.”
“Burn,” Mila said.
“You knocked on Aunt Mila?” Lucy asked.
Olivia started to laugh so she turned around.
I looked at Mila and shrugged my shoulders.
“Yes,” Mila said. “Silas knocked on my door. To visit me. To… um…”
“Is that how he put the baby in your belly?” Lucy asked.
“Hey, I have an idea,” Anna said. “How about more sugar?”
Lucy cried out with happiness.
Tyler put Lucy down, she grabbed Anna’s hand and they went toward the kitchen.
Tyler stared daggers at Mila and me.
“I can’t wait until your baby is old enough… I’m getting payback for all of this…”
He stormed off.
I focused on Mila again.
“You sure you like it here?” Mila whispered.
I touched her face. “I fucking love it here.”
Just as the day began to settle…
Here came Edith and Thomas.
Lucy and Anna were in a booth, coloring.
Olivia and Mila were talking pregnancy.
That conversation I didn’t mind hearing all that much because it let me know that everything Mila was going through was normal. Plus, if I was going to get swept up in the romance of pregnancy and all the sappy stuff that went with it, seeing Mila and her future sister-in-law pregnant at the same time… it was nothing short of amazing.
And for as much of an asshole as I always thought Tyler would be, he never passed up the chance to touch Olivia. Her arm, hand, her belly. He kissed her each time he walked by her. Right up to the point where Olivia had to ask him to stop.
“Yeah, Tyler, she’s already pregnant,” Mila said.
“I know,” Tyler said. “I’m just taking advantage of the worry-free sex.”
“Ew,” Mila said.
That was when Edith threw the kitchen door open.
She looked left to right and said, “He’s an asshole.”
I assumed her looking around was to make sure Lucy wasn’t around.
Thomas entered through the front door of the restaurant.
Everyone spread out and gave them room to argue.
“We’re not doing this anymore,” Edith said, pointing to Thomas.
“Damn right we aren’t,” Thomas said as he walked closer to the counter. “This whole adventure is over.”
“Is it?” Edith said. “The adventure between us? Is that what you want?”
“You know what I meant.”
“You tried to fight Cliff!”
“He shouldn’t have been flirting with you.”
Mila and I held hands tight.
We were both ready to laugh.
“He did not flirt,” Edith said.
“He touched you.”
“Oh, jeez, not that!” Edith said. “What will I ever do? You’re a wimp.”
“Wimp?”
“Yeah. You pussy.”
“Edith,” Olivia said.
Edith snapped her fingers. “Not now, Olivia. I’m not against making a pregnant woman cry with the mood I’m in.”
I watched Tyler pull Olivia a few steps back.
Edith was on fire.
And Thomas wasn’t going to back down.
“I love you enough to argue, Edith,” Thomas said.
“Take that sorry-ass excuse and stick it up your old ass,” Edith said.
“Maybe I’ll trade your old ass in,” Thomas said.
Everyone gasped.
The restaurant went silent.
Thomas knew he went too far.
Edith casually walked over to the dessert case and took out a full pie.
“I’m going to get this ready,” she said. “In case anyone is hungry.”
“I can eat,” Thomas said.
Edith spun around and threw the entire pie at Thomas.
It was like watching it move through the air in slow motion.
The pie hit his face and he stumbled back.
Edith then went into the kitchen.
Thomas had pie on his shirt, pants, and all around him on the floor.
He licked his lips and nodded.
He looked at me. “She makes the best lemon meringue pie I’ve ever tasted.”
Chapter Twenty-Nine
MILA
Ma asked me to help at the restaurant one morning. Silas tempted me to stay in bed. His fingers and tongue were so damn enjoyable, but we both knew I was going to
