name.”
I laughed again. “There’s still time, Silas.”
“Yeah,” he said. “Can’t wait for that fight.”
“Hey. No more fighting. Got it?”
“I’ll do my best,” Silas said. “Now, come on, it’s bedtime, darling.”
I inched my way back on the bed and Silas reached over me and turned off the lamp on the nightstand. The room was mostly dark, just a little light from the bathroom nightlight.
“Silas,” I whispered.
“Yeah, darling?” he asked as he put his arm around me and pulled me close to him.
He held me tight against him.
His hand on my stomach.
“If we were on the road together… touring… you realize you’d just be starting your set?”
I felt Silas chuckle. “Yeah, that sounds about right.”
“Are you sure this is what you want?”
“I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. I can’t wait to see you run around our house. I can’t wait to carry our son around our house in the middle of the night. I can’t wait for his first steps. Or his first Christmas. Or that first morning he sleeps in and we sit in the sunroom and sip coffee together. That’s all I want.”
I took a deep breath and tucked the ultrasound picture under my pillow.
Silas was holding me.
A day of pure hell turned out to be not that bad of a day at all.
I woke up the next morning and began to search for Silas.
I wanted him to touch me.
Not just touch me… but… touch me…
My body felt tingly. I ached in certain areas. Areas only Silas could take care of…
Silas wasn’t in bed with me.
I lifted the covers and checked as though Silas was playing hide-and-seek with me.
He wasn’t.
I looked at my phone and gasped when I realized what time it was.
“What?” I asked.
I sat up and checked the time again.
There was no way…
I stood up and hurried out of the bedroom to find another clock.
The microwave clock was the same time as my phone.
It was the latest I had slept in a really long time.
When I turned to go back into the room, I felt myself get slightly dizzy.
“Okay, Mila,” I whispered. “Calm down.”
One deep breath later and I was fine.
My next visit was to the bathroom. I started to wonder if things were changing enough that it allowed the little guy growing to just sit on my bladder like a barstool. Because… wow… when that feeling hit, it hit hard.
I was so focused on reaching the toilet I didn’t see the note taped to the mirror until I went to wash my hands.
A handwritten note from Silas.
Morning darling -
Hope you’re reading this as you wash your hands and not throwing up. Wanted to let you sleep in. Edith was calling you. Sorry I answered. I’m at the restaurant. Come over when you can. Take your time.
Love you,
Silas
I grabbed the note and walked back to the bedroom.
Silas at the restaurant?
I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.
A part of me wanted to crawl back into bed and just keep sleeping. A part of me wanted coffee and food. A bigger part of me didn’t want to make coffee or deal with making food.
“Too bad there’s not a restaurant I can go to,” I whispered with a smile.
I got changed and left the inn.
My mind wondered what in the world Silas could have been doing at the restaurant. Maybe something broke? Maybe Edith needed help changing the long lightbulbs or something? Maybe he was washing dishes? Cooking?
There was one thing I certainly did not expect at all.
I walked into the restaurant and froze in place.
I put a hand to my mouth to hide my giant smile.
Silas walked by me… wearing an apron and carrying a tray of food.
I followed him to the third table against the window.
“Okay, I think I’ve got everything here,” he said in a rough voice.
It was four women sitting there. All of them Ma’s age. All of them staring at Silas like he was a piece of meat and they hadn’t eaten in years. A bunch of menopausal, horny women tearing my man apart with their eyes.
I knew who each one was too.
And if I wanted to be a bitch, I could have started talking.
Throwing out some gossip.
Like Meredith. When she touched Silas’s forearm as he put her plate down, I felt like announcing that she had a botched plastic surgery situation a few years ago after she found out her husband slept with his secretary.
But I kept my mouth shut and watched Silas.
He was gruff and way
