appreciate not dying today.” Halo told him.
“Look, I will just tell him it was an accident and you can back me up and then Halo and I will go back to the motel and talk. I assume we can’t get the pilot to just take us back to civilization if this Gammon guy says no?”
Keith snorted. “You would lie to Gammon? Little gi—” He stopped and cupped his balls, “um Gracie you don’t lie to Gammon. You don’t lie to a shifter period. We can smell a lie.”
Gracie turned startled eyes toward Hendrix who nodded.
“It is always a bad idea to lie to a shifter. It is an even worse idea to lie to me.” Gammon’s voice came from the woods. “Now, give me one good reason I shouldn’t kill them where they sit.”
Gracie looked up at the man glaring at them and tried to retreat further into Hendrix’s arms but she had no where to go. Halo also started scooting closer to Hendrix until a growl from Gammon stopped him short.
Hendrix let out a huff. “Mia would not be happy if you killed the mother of her grandchild. And Gracie would not be happy if you killed Halo and I would not be happy if Gracie was made to be unhappy.”
“A human? So Mia was right, you are not fully shifter.”
“No, Dacron thought half at least.”
“I see. Keith, take them and lock them up. Hendrix,” and evil grin lit Gammon’s face, “Willow wants to see you.” With that Gammon turned and faded into the woods again.
Gracie turned to glare at Hendrix, “Who the hell is Willow?”
“That would be my mate and she is not happy with your mate for getting me shot. She is not happy with you for shooting me.”
“Oh. I am not his mate whatever that means.”
“Come on. Let’s go.” Hendrix stood and pulled Gracie to her feet.
“Where are we going?”
“You heard Gammon, Keith is to lock you up until Gammon decides what to do.”
“Well that isn’t happening. You are his son. Tell him no. I will ride back with you and we will get this shit settled right now.”
“Gammon said,” Keith started to say before Gracie turned on him.
“I don’t care what he said. He can’t tell me what to do.”
“Maybe not,” Hendrix voice was mild, “But he does command us and he gave an order and we will follow it. Now, I don’t think I have to tell you what will happen to the two of you if you try anything with Keith, but just in case let me lay it out for you. Keith will kill Halo if either of you move against him. He will tie you up and you will stay in lockup supervised twenty four hours a day until you give birth then you will be killed. I am not telling you this to threaten you, or scare you, well maybe a little to scare you. I am telling you this because the male that just left here raised me from a pup and I know what he will do if you hurt one of his. Now, get in the car, in the back, no not your car, get in Keith’s car. Follow instructions and maybe, just maybe, no one will die today.”
“You’re serious?”
“Deadly so. I would hate for the mother of my child to die, I would hate even more if that one happened to be you.”
Gracie swayed on her feet as the reality of the situation sank in. Hendrix picked her up and walked over to the car, opening the door he gently placed her inside and closed the door. Turning to Halo he glared. “You should have taken better care of her, grasshopper.”
“Me?” Halo glared at him across the roof of the car, “I’m not the alien wolf whatever that knocked her up. This is all on you.” He ducked his head and awkwardly climbed in the car as soon as Keith opened the door.
Chapter Eighteen
Dominick looked around the room before sitting down. “The furniture is primitive, the house is primitive. How can you think you will be happy here?”
“How could I not? I have Casey. I could be happy in a mud hut.”
Dominick blinked a few times as he tried to imagine living in such conditions. “But what will you do? Here? There is nothing here.”
“Retire my friend. It is time and past time I put the past behind me and looked toward my future.”
“Where did you go? You dropped that information on us and left. That
