Sadie. “Uh huh, yeah, okay, what else? That isn’t much to go on you know. Okay, well, I mean I am not upset but— yes alright. I will let you know. I love you too. Let me know what your space buddies have to say. Yes I will stay here until you call. Bye.”
She pressed to end the call and tossed her phone back in her purse. “Well, Ms. Sadie Walker, how do you feel about taking a little test or two?”
“For?” Sadie asked. “What kind of test? Do they hurt? Cause I’m gonna tell you right now I don’t do pain.”
“No.” Casey drew in a deep breath and held it before letting it out in a rush. “Dacron said our people had three main lines. They only worried about two, the royal line and the warrior line because without them the race would fall. But, since he mated me and I am of the royal line and we have Kate who is of the warrior line we need the third line.”
“Why would you need the third line if he is destroying the race?” Angelica asked, bitterness in her voice.
Casey shrugged. “Now I am not real sure, to tell you the truth. I guess because it will be a couple of centuries before the power is diluted enough for the children of our children to be able to pass as slightly enhanced humans. Not enough power to die for but more than what the humans have. He said this third line is a sort of peace keeper line. When the royal line and the warrior line butts heads and can’t agree on something they would call in the peacekeeper line to mediate.”
“What do I have to do?” Sadie asked.
“Well, it is really simple, I ask a few questions, you answer them. Let me, hold on,” She dug in her purse again after looking at her watch. “Kate should be free let me see if I can start an argument with her and then you see if you can fix our disagreement.”
“Wait.” Angelica held her hand up. “Before you call Kate. You want to start an argument to see if Sadie can fix it? Don’t bother. I can answer that. Miranda is Kate’s grandmother so I am going to assume Kate has a lot of her grandmother in her, I know her mother does. Sadie is the one Miranda sent to contain me and kill me if it came to that precisely because Sadie is the one who always calmed any disagreements between myself and Miranda. Sadie’s mom was the same way but to an even deeper degree. Sadie does it in such a way you feel like you have been scolded stealing cookies from a homeless person on the street who hasn’t eaten in days. Her mother could do it by blanketing you with love and making you feel like nothing would be better in the world than to bring a smile to Louise’s face. She was the definition of love and she made you want to do better and be better. If that is what your peace keeping line looks like then you don’t need to bother with a bunch of questions.”
“Well, if you don’t mind, I think I will anyway. Sorry mom, I love you but you don’t exactly inspire confidence at the moment that you have the best interest of our people at heart.”
“Casey! How dare you. I sent you away to protect you, getting you banned from the clans, I have worked tirelessly for decades to make your life better.”
Casey rocketed to her feet. “You did what?” Her voice low and menacing she asked, “You got me banned? You had me thrown out? You are the one who made me clan-less and alone?”
Angelica’s eyes widened and her hand shook as she raised it to her mouth.
“Oh, no mother dearest. I think it is too late to cover your mouth, much too late.”
“Casey, dear, it was for the best. You have wonderful friends, a loving husband and a future with possibilities. What would you have if you had stayed?”
“I don’t know mom. The point is you meddle, so as much as I love you, you need to sit right there and keep your mouth closed while I talk to Sadie. We will talk about this later.” She threw her hand up when Angelica opened her mouth to speak. “No, mom, I am so furious right now at you I don’t trust myself not to say some things
