I kept my mouth shut, he would have gone anyway. I was hoping he would spend the day in his room like he normally does, but he hasn't, and I refuse to be the one to leave.
“Do we have to watch this shit?” he groans.
I glance up from my phone to see Keeping Up With The Kardashians on TV. Honestly, I don't really like this show, but knowing Cade is this annoyed with it makes me want to start.
“Yep.”
He gets up and goes to grab the remote, but I pull it away just in time. He rolls his eyes and tries to take it from me.
“Give me the remote, Lennon.”
“No,” I refuse.
When he lunges for it again, I do the first thing I can think of and shove it down my shirt. His brows raise and the corner of his mouth forms into a devilish smirk.
“Do you really think that's going to stop me?”
No, I don't, and that's probably one of the main reasons I did it, but there's no way in hell I'm telling him that. I shrug and do my best to cover my chest, but he goes for it anyway.
I can't help but giggle. “Quit, or I'll call for Melani.” He doesn't stop. “Mel! Mel, Cade is trying to go down my shirt!”
He chuckles. “Nice try, but she left about an hour ago.”
Fuck, that means we really are completely alone together. I don't know whether that excites me or scares the living shit out of me.
I look up at Cade and notice how close he is. One leg is draped over my lap, one hand is on my wrist, and his face is only inches away from mine. The two of us both stop moving and just stare back at each other. The second he glances down at my lips, my breath hitches.
At a snail's pace, he starts to lean in—until a bolt of lightning comes slamming down and hits the backyard. I scream as thunder roars and the power goes out. Cade jumps at my reaction and falls onto the couch beside me.
“Now look what you did,” I tell him.
He groans. “Shut up. Don't you have backup generators in this palace?”
We do, and they should have turned on by now. “They should kick in any second.” A few more seconds pass and there isn't any sign of the lights coming back on. “Any second now.”
“ALL RIGHT, THANKS DAD. Have fun, and tell Nora I said hi.”
I hang up the phone and turn my attention to Cade, who is currently lighting every candle we have. “He said he'll have someone come by to check out the generators, but we have to wait until the storm passes.”
“Of course,” he grumbles. He pulls his phone out of his back pocket and tosses it onto the table. “And my phone is dead. This is just great.”
I huff. “You're such a baby.”
It's one thing to be stuck with Cade when he has something to entertain him, but with no power and a dead cellphone, I don't stand a chance. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that he's going to fill his time by fucking with me, and I'm not in the mood for it.
I pull my iPad from the kitchen drawer and pass it to him. “Knock yourself out.”
He purses his lips for a second before opening the iPad. I swear, it's like entertaining a child with him.
The wind continues to blow harshly outside, wreaking havoc and causing destruction all over the city, if the articles I've been reading are accurate. I look out the window, and my eyes narrow at something shining on one of the tables. When I recognize the piece of jewelry, my heart stops.
“My necklace!” I shriek.
Immediately going to the back door to go get it, I'm stopped by two strong arms pulling me back. “Oh, no you don't. Have you seen it out there?”
“I need to get that necklace, Cade.”
“It's just a necklace.”
I fight against him until he lets me go. “It's not. It was my grandmother's. I must have taken it off last night for some reason, but I have to go get it.”
Cade steps around me and opens the door. “Fine, but be fast, and careful.”
A part of me is shocked. Is he actually worrying about me, after spending the last couple weeks wanting to slit my throat for sport? I shake the thoughts from my mind. Now isn't the time for this.
The wind is even worse than it looks. I brace
