of glass. My mates flung themselves in front of me, taking the barrage of shards. Rebellion members scattered with screams and shouts, avoiding the creature that had plunged through the window.
I shoved my mates aside, facing off with the ball of scales and feathers that was brushing away stray pieces of glass. He was still skeletal, so malnourished looking he reminded me of Zenoah. His markings were a brilliant rainbow, drawing all eyes to him. Blood leaked from his feathered, bat-like wings, trailing down the elegant tail feathers that pooled on the floor. “Birdman.”
Snarls and growls ripped from my mates as they recognized the scent from the island. “Greetings.” His voice was as flat and cool as I remembered it. He held out a taloned hand, a dark, crimson envelope lying flat on his palm. “Mail service. Another missive for you.” He held it out for me.
“I can’t read him,” Damien replied frantically.
Unable to help myself, I stepped forward, my mates crying out and grabbing at me as I snatched the letter. Birdman kept his eyes on me, cocking his head in an animalistic way as he searched my every expression while I studied the envelope. It was heavy, the paper thick and high quality, the seal done in black wax marked with a slithering S.
“Careful, Nix,” Theo warned.
I murmured my agreement, curiosity getting the better of me as I split the seal and tugged out the dense, elegantly designed paper inside. I scanned the mocking words before my hands shook and my legs gave out. My mates’ strong arms caught me as the invitation fell from my hands and fluttered to the floor.
“So it begins,” Birdman whispered. “I hope that resurrection power of yours is as reliable as you think. Good luck, sister mine. You’re going to need it.”

“Picture it in your mind’s eye and bring your magick forward. Let it fill your arms, trickle into your hands, and warm your fingers.” I listened to him like he was my sensei, absorbing every word.
“Do you feel your magick?” he asked, to make sure I was channeling properly.
The weight of it sat heavily in my fingertips, and I nodded that I was ready.
“Good girl,” he praised in a sinfully dark voice, and suddenly all my efforts were for naught, my thoughts clouded from the desperate heat pulsing in my clit, begging for attention. “Let your magick flow from your body.” Jolon was hypnotic, and I let my head tip back against his shoulder as I mindlessly obeyed his command, completely caught up in the way he made me feel. His nose skimmed my ear as he spoke and his touch shifted. One of his hands went to my hip—pulling me closer—while the other encircled a wrist, his thumb stroking over my pulse point. My hands warmed, and I knew if I opened my eyes there would be a purple glow between my palms—my signature color. “Feel the way it makes your skin tingle as it builds.” The words tickled my ear and caressed my neck. I’d never felt like this before, so hot and needy. What was that word I’d seen in the historical romance books I’d read? Wanton. It was a feeling that I couldn’t explain but wanted more of. So much more.
“That’s it. Now let it go.” Jolon’s hand tightened on my waist, and it only served to bring me closer, making the minuscule distance that had been between us nonexistent. And I felt everything. “Open
