had blond hair and blue eyes, and he was wiry and tall. All three of them looked no-nonsense.
I said hello to the other three by name, and they returned my greeting with respect. Also a bit of pride that I knew who they were. I imagined they all had different personalities and quirks like anyone else, but at the moment they were all business. Serina was a lot more relaxed, having known and helped to train me over the last three weeks.
Serina smirked, “I expected more arguing.”
I laughed, “The threat is real, and my mate is potential collateral damage in a smash and grab operation, Serina.”
She tilted her head, then laughed, “True enough, it makes much more sense now. Call me Rina?”
Chances were an attack wouldn’t come anytime soon. Whoever was behind it would need to come up with a new plan and hire someone to implement it, which would take time since the failed attempt was just the previous night.
“Alright, Rina. Let’s get going, don’t want to be late for class.”
We headed out to the van and piled in. Tiffany pasted herself to my side and snuggled in contentedly.
I was sure they’d be getting a new team member soon. There had to be at least a few more shifters with three forms in the pack. Although, ones and twos seemed to be far more common, and fours and alphas very rare. I also had no idea how that would happen, and I didn’t want to ask on the heels of her losing her teammate. Maybe she didn’t want to replace him just yet.
As we pulled away Tiffany let out a ping of magic that rolled out like a wave in all directions as her aura expanded and thinned, then another one after six blocks or so. It was obvious my witch was taking it very seriously and looking for possible trouble by identifying nearby supernaturals.
I was feeling extremely coddled, which tweaked my pride and vanity, but I pushed it down. Tiffany was in danger too, plus giving in had also let me win on keeping Ginny protected as well. She hadn’t even fought against it very hard that she couldn’t go out without an escort either.
I wasn’t a dishwasher anymore. Even humans had bodyguards for important politicians and the rich, because they’d always be targets. I’d always be a target for what I was, unique in this supernatural world and more powerful than any other. Not to mention I was mated to two of the most important and powerful supernaturals in the city. It was just the way it was, and with that little bit of mental gymnastics that were true, I actually felt a lot better about it. I bet Cadence, Stanton, and Merry never went anywhere without an escort either.
No one could be vigilant at all times, and it made sense to have guards that could point out problems, risks, and security holes.
It was a bit overcast, but there were some breaks in the clouds, and it hadn’t rained yet that day as we drove north through the city. It wasn’t all that far, both the pack building and the coven’s brownstone were in the northern part of Chicago. It was just the witches lived in the really posh part, almost on the edge of the city. Ten, maybe fifteen minutes tops in bad traffic.
Serina asked, “What time do we pick you up, half after eleven?”
I nodded, “That should work. I’ll send you a text if we need to change that, or if we’ll be staying later.”
That would be annoying, all the coordination and waiting instead of hopping in a car and going, but I’d get used to it.
“What do you guys do besides training to kick ass and kicking ass.”
Serina laughed, “There’s more to life than that?”
Oliver said, “Chew nails, drink tequila, and pick up fast shifter women.”
Serina snorted, and Nick whapped Oliver in the back of the neck.
Tiffany looked amused, “Isn’t that all of them?”
Serina said, “We do love to train. We watch over the pack, protect our alpha and her mates, but you mean in our off time?”
I nodded, “I still need to get familiar with all our duties as enforcers, but yes. I meant in your off time.”
She shrugged, “We don’t do much else, keep the building secure, fight rogues and fae, protect each other, our people, and our leaders. There’s procedures and paperwork you need to know, but that all goes to those four or five things. Daniel and Nick are mated,
