if Tiffany hadn’t removed the silver from the five of us.”
Ginny sighed, “Very well. Someone go and grab the chains, and then let’s clean up and get the hell out of here. Twenty-nine less rogues in the world is not a bad afternoon’s work.”
We moved to get it done, got dressed, and headed back to the pack building. I knew as hard as I blamed myself, it must’ve been worse for Serina, the other team leads, and Ginny. None of us had thought to recon for a possible ambush, but then I was also the least experienced. Not that I gave myself slack for that, but it was personal for them. Whereas it was more of an alpha failure and shame for me, but I hadn’t known Tyler my whole life. I’d barely known him at all.
It could’ve been so much worse. When I mentioned the mini-HD-quadcopters, one for each enforcer van on the way back to base, Carmen promised to look into it. In hindsight it was obvious, but at least we’d have it for next time.
Chapter Six
Ginny sighed and melted against me when we got in private, and I just held her for a while as Tiffany hugged her from behind. She was mostly alright, if a bit as upset as I was at our dumb but lucky turnout. When I let her go, we immediately started to pig out on dinner, which was a pasta and meatball dish, along with garlic bread. We’d all expended a lot of magic, and we needed to eat and rest to regain it.
We’d gotten Silas locked up in one of the silver cages down in the basement, and we had him under guard. She’d also contacted the vampires, hopefully one would show up soon so we could hear his story and make sense of what happened. Not to mention finding out about his rogue network which we all suspected he had.
Ginny said, “Thank you by the way, Sam. You did the right thing, and saved lives. I don’t imagine it was easy. I know I’d have been frothing at the mouth to get to you if I’d been in your position.”
I winked, “I only almost lost it once, thanks to Tiff.”
Tiffany waved that away, “He directed me, not the other way around. Although I did have to calm him once, when we discovered Tyler.”
Ginny nodded, “We’ll do better next time. I let myself get overeager. I never considered it was a trap, even though we knew he was canny. In hindsight, it seems odd that his witch would’ve screwed up so badly.”
We went back to inhaling our meals after that. Ginny seemed to be taking it well, not good, but well enough. I supposed she was no stranger to loss, no one in this world would be. I mean, her scent was a bit of a mess, it was her first death after becoming the alpha and taking charge of the pack, but she was holding it together.
After taming our stomachs, we all took a relatively fast shower and got dressed in our earlier nicer clothes before heading back down to her office. We all got a little lost in busy work, for myself I got started on that task I’d set for myself earlier. I opened up the employee files and started to memorize the names and faces of all the pack, starting with the enforcers under my four team leads.
Still, we hadn’t gotten very far when Kari stuck her head in.
“Violet is here, from the vampires. She’s being taken down.”
Ginny looked up and nodded, “Thank you, Kari.”
She got up and Tiffany and I followed her out and over to the elevator. When it opened up, we stepped inside and Ginny hit the basement button.
“Violet is one of his daughters, and one of the possible heirs.”
I asked curiously, “How many does he have?”
Ginny giggled, “Five at last count. I think he keeps trying for a son. Violet is our age, nineteen, so I suspect he had more than one reason to send her. He’s got a twelve-year-old, Hope, and two others in their late twenties, Faith and Chastity.”
“You said five?”
Ginny nodded, “Missed one, Grace is Violet’s twin.”
I was curious, because I hadn’t met a vampire yet outside of Stanton. When the doors opened, she was easy to pick out. She had the same dark reddish-brown hair the color of cherry wood, but much longer and it was wavy and voluminous. She had the same piercing green eyes as her father
