stayed pasted to Tiffany’s side in my bear form as Carmen’s team approached the front door and we followed in their wake. That’s about as far as the plan got before everything went tits up, which was to say not far at all.
Crack! Crack! The loud reverberations of rifle shots reached my ears, in the back and away from the front of the house. I couldn’t do anything about the back shooter, and I suppressed the rage I felt at the idea of Ginny being shot. I spun around to look for the shooter as one of our tigers went down on the edge of the property, in John’s team. Crack! Crack! A second set of rifle retorts reached my ears as a wolf went down, and that time I saw the shooter. I channeled my anger into my fire spell, which took a little over a second to form. I’d gotten a bit better at it with practice, and it flew away quickly enough to leave an after-trail of fire as it hit the shooter in the chest and exploded.
That’s when about twenty wolves rushed out of the neighbor’s yards toward the front of the house. Crack! A third rifle retort from the backyard.
Tiffany said, “The witch is casting, I got her. Get that other fucking shooter and leave the twenty wolves to our ten enforcers. You stay out here too, Carmen. The ones in the house aren’t going anywhere.”
Then she started to cast while looking up at the second story bedroom window in the middle of the house.
I growled at Carmen, who ran besides Tiffany and nodded in understanding, while the other remaining seven bears and tigers took on almost three times their number in wolves. I reared back and shifted to an eagle, and I circled into the air. Eagles had amazing distance vision, so picking up some jackass with a rife on a roof two blocks north was child’s play. The fucker got off a fourth shot, before I could kill him with a plasma ball and I quickly took stock with one of those ping wave spells, like a radar. There were eight people in the house, the witch, and six shifters including Silas.
Four of the five perimeter guards were down on the north side, including Serina. The last one was running around to the front of the house to make the odds eight against twenty.
My mate, along with Mark’s entire team had breached the house, and seemed to be fighting those six wolves on the first floor. Even odds were better than nothing, but Silas was an alpha too, and I’m sure his personal guard were the strongest wolves in his rogue pack. The twenty wolves outside were one’s and two’s on power and forms, so I was sure the more powerful enforcers along with the two four form leads could take on those idiots. Even with worse than two to one odds at twenty to eight.
I swung in front of the house, and looked at the window, and the witch was the only one on the second floor. They probably figured it was the safest place, no way to get to him without getting by the alpha and his five guardians. Of course, they’d been wrong. I waited two seconds for Tiffany to disrupt the bitch’s current spell, then I aimed for the window and dove. At the last second, I shifted to a bear form and slammed through the window with a whole lot of momentum and sixteen hundred pounds of mass. It hurt even with that weight and momentum, which is why I shifted to tiger form as I landed and rolled on the floor to break my momentum.
The witch gaped at me as I roared and turned to her, then lunged. She didn’t even have time to scream out, much less cast a spell before my powerful jaws clamped down around her neck and squeezed, then shook violently. Her damned head popped off, half bitten through and half torn, and I immediately turned and leapt out the window. A twenty-foot height was nothing to a tiger, much less a shifter tiger who was tougher and stronger.
I felt a lot better being next to Tiffany again, and when I chuffed at Carmen, she tore off toward the shifters fighting her team and the last member of Denise’s team, as well as John and his three remaining people. The two that were shot weren’t healing, but they weren’t dead yet either. Must’ve
