second before pouring enough egg to cover the bottom of the skillet. He waited a bit before adding a dash of salt and pepper. He stirred it a bit before the eggs settled, then added the veggies and a sprinkle of cheese.
“It’s all about timing. You go with your gut and fold over one side.”
Kenny plated the first omelet.
“Want to try?”
Ava smiled. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
They traded places, and Kenny walked Ava through every step. Her first omelet was a bit of a disaster and ended up falling apart.
“It’s okay, try again,” Kenny encouraged.
By the third omelet she had it, and it stayed together. Kenny took over to finish it up.
“Can you wake Morgan up?”
“Yes,” Ava said as she left the kitchen.
Logan trudged into the kitchen, bags under his eyes. He went for the creamer in the fridge, a butter pecan flavor. He dragged his feet over to the coffee maker.
“Why no coffee?”
Kenny opened the cabinet and passed the coffee over to Logan.
“Uh—”
Logan started to make the coffee, filling the kitchen up with its rich smell. Kenny went about plating dishes. He poked his head into the living room.
“Food’s ready.”
Hodge was the first one up, but he made sure to grab his mate’s hand.
“Sorry, Kenny, my mate is a little too excited,” Rudd said.
Kenny shrugged. “It’s okay. I make good omelets.”
Gabriella came running into the kitchen and ran right into Logan. Kenny watched in amazement as Logan’s zombie eyes changed and he smiled at Gabriella as if he’d already had a full cup of coffee.
“Good morning. Don’t you look like a little princess,” Logan said.
Gabriella twirled in her little orange dress.
“Isn’t it pretty? Daddy let me pick it out.”
Logan nodded.
She stared at Logan and pointed down for him to crouch. Logan squatted to Gabriella’s eye level. With two small hands, she squished his cheeks.
“Daddy says naps are good for you. I’ll let you hold Susy the elephant if you need help sleeping.”
It was the cutest thing ever, and Logan looked lost for words, which was a change for him.
Clyde shouldered Kenny. “Can you believe Logan is capable of conversation without coffee?”
Cole laughed next to them. “I can’t believe he can see people before caffeine enters his system.”
Logan shot them both a death glare before he smiled back at Gabriella.
“Gabriella, why don’t you let Logan make coffee and you come eat,” Indigo said.
Gabriella let Logan’s cheeks go and gave him the brightest smile. “Are you going to eat too, Loggy?”
“Sure thing, if I can sit next to you, cutie.”
Gabriella giggled as she ran over to Indigo. The death glare Logan shot Indigo was more like his pre-coffee self. Morgan came in yawning with Ava.
“What can’t you do?”
Kenny kissed Morgan good morning. He gave Morgan a plate and sat him down.
“Ava, can you help take plates to Dezi and Kash?” Kenny asked.
“Oh, um, sure.”
She grabbed a plate and orange juice, and Kenny grabbed the other as they made their way to the infirmary. He knocked and waited until he heard Dezi’s deep voice.
“Come in.”
Kash was sound asleep, and Dezi had a baby in each arm. Ava “awed” at the sight of the twins.
“Would you like to hold one?” Dezi asked.
“Can I?”
Dezi laughed. “If you let me try another joke.”
Ava caught herself before she shrugged and inadvertently spilled the glass of orange juice. She put it down on the table near the bed. She grabbed one of the chairs from the side of the room and sat down. Dezi placed one of the twins in her arms.
“Rainar is a bit of a wiggler, so make sure you hold him tight.”
Kenny wondered if Ava would be just as excited if it were Morgan and Kenny’s baby.
“I haven’t had one of your omelets in a while,” Dezi said.
“Kash cooks better than me, and not having to cook for you heathens is a job I’ll happily give up,” Kenny said.
Dezi laughed.
“Mind feeding me? I do have my hands full.”
Kenny stared at Dezi for a long second before he sighed. He put the orange juice down and forked off a corner piece and fed it to Dezi.
“Yep, still as good as I remember it.”
“It better be food you’re groaning over,” Kash said sleepily.
“Of course,” Dezi shot back.
“Morning, Kash. Congrats on your two bundles of joy,” Kenny said.
Kash stretched and wiped his eyes. He instantly located both of his children before settling down. He found the plate of food and orange juice near his bed.
“Thank you, Kenny.”
“It wasn’t just me. Ava helped.”
Ava’s cheeks went red as Kash and Dezi both thanked
