but that’s a bit random.
I just thought you should know. In case no one told you that today.
The tailor did, I teased back.
Tell that homewrecker mitts off.
I chuckled.
“Surely Cam wouldn’t mind,” Garrick said to my left. “Isn’t that right, Cam?”
“Right,” I said distractedly.
“That’s fantastic.”
“Wait.” The relief in his voice made me look up from my phone. That relief was normally reserved for will you bail me out of jail, or can I crash on your couch… the answer to both of which was “no.” “What’s fantastic? And just what did I agree to?”
“You said you’d go with Bailey to the cake tasting. I’m allergic to just about everything, so I won’t be able to give her much of an opinion.”
“Why don’t you guys get a cake that you can eat?” I asked with a frown.
He shrugged. “If you can find a cake with no peanut butter, chocolate, nuts, or strawberries, be my guest.”
“That list really cut me off at the knees,” I said after a moment. “Why aren’t you in a bubble?”
He chuckled. “You already said you’d do it. You can’t take it back now.”
“I only said yes because I wasn’t paying attention,” I grumbled.
“And just what could be more important than listening to every word that comes out of my precious mouth?”
“He was texting,” Beau tattled for reasons only known to him.
“Texting who?” Garrick demanded. “This is my day, Foster.”
“Getting fitted at the tailors is not your day, Groomzilla,” I said exasperatedly. “And it’s none of your concern who I was texting.”
“It was probably Journey,” Ben said absently. I gave him a look of surprise, and he blushed furiously, realizing what he’d said. “Turn, please.”
“Did Mindy send out a newsletter?” I demanded.
“Yes,” he said promptly as the entire room said “no.” There were numerous groans as Ben blushed some more. Poor thing wouldn’t last six seconds under interrogation. “Sorry, it was a secret lovers edition,” he admitted without further prompting.
Hell, forget interrogation, the detectives would only have to ask nicely.
“There was a picture of the two of you in front of the supermarket, and it was….” Ben looked in danger of expiring on the spot. I almost offered to fan him so he could cool off. “It was intense.”
“They were only talking in that picture,” Blark said.
“Not the one on the back,” Blark #2 interjected helpfully. “They were kissing in that one.”
“There was a back?” Garrick sent his brothers an irritated look. “Mindy needs to go digital.”
For Pete’s sake. I huffed. “Journey and I are just friends. Whatever happens between us stays between us.”
“And Mindy,” Garrick added.
And unfortunately, Mindy. “One day, I’m going to break that woman’s computer over my knee,” I grumbled.
The one good thing about being busted was that when my phone binged again, I didn’t have to bother being sly. U busy right now?
I sighed regretfully. Yep.
He wasn’t deterred. I want to see you tonight. I need my Cam fix.
I barely held in a smile. I loved the way he approached things without artifice. I followed his lead. I want to see you, too.
We should do dinner, he suggested. Plus something dirty.
I hesitated, mostly because that sounded like a fucking date. Dinner?
Dinner. I don’t think sharing a meal was banned on your little list.
I chuckled. I should’ve known he’d still be bitter about that. Dinner, then.
And a movie, he prompted. Then all the dirty things.
And just like that, my day took an upswing.
I pressed sleep on my phone and stuck it in my pocket. When I looked up, I found myself the target of many sets of very interested eyes. “Not a peep to Mindy,” I warned.
Garrick grinned. “Yeah, we’ll see.”
Chapter 18
Journey
Cameron was getting better at this fling business.
There was a different kind of energy about him from the moment he opened the door to let me in. For one thing, he hadn’t bothered to get all spiffy. Not in an I can’t be bothered to look nice for you way, but more of a what’s the point of getting dressed when I’m just going to get naked kind of way.
I took a few seconds to enjoy the sight of him in some gray sweatpants and a plain black shirt, his chestnut hair rumpled, his feet bare. The look in those intense green eyes let me know we weren’t going to make it through dinner—or a movie. He confirmed my suspicions a few seconds later when he pushed me against the wall. The door slammed behind us.
“Blargh,” was all I managed before he took my mouth.
He
