So he didn’t let that aspect bother him.
And he had to admit Adam had been more open with physical affection in general. He didn’t seem to mind holding hands or letting Matt put an arm around him—or putting one around Matt.
The bigger problem, though, was that he couldn’t seem to pin Adam down to a discussion about what they needed to do. There was so much to talk about, and while he’d admit they had time—another eight or so months—some of the things didn’t have to wait and, in fact, Matt didn’t want to wait on. In his opinion, it didn’t make sense for them to sleep in separate houses. They’d been together more often since that night two weeks ago, but Matt still spent more time in his own bed than with Adam. Why couldn’t they be together? It wasn’t like their parents didn’t know about them—or the baby.
If Adam didn’t want to live with one of their parents—which Matt could agree with—then they needed to talk about finding a place of their own. But every time Matt brought it up, Adam dodged the discussion. Matt understood that a couple of weeks ago, when it was all so brand-new, but it was time to start addressing these things.
Matt’s train of thought was derailed when the exam room door opened. An older man with graying hair, wire-framed glasses, and a friendly smile stepped into the room. “Hello, Adam,” he greeted, then turned to Matt. “I’m Doctor Graham.”
“I’m Matt. I’m the, uh, other half.” Matt knew there was pride in his voice, but he refused to even try to hide it. He was proud and happy about their baby.
Dr. Graham smiled. “Nice to meet you. So, Adam, how are you feeling?”
“Ugh,” Adam replied, making Dr. Graham laugh.
“Let’s see… tired and sick?” Dr. Graham moved over to the sink and turned the water on.
Adam sighed. “Not all that tired yet.”
“Then the nausea remedies I suggested didn’t work?”
“No.” Adam frowned. “Not at all.”
“Is there something else?” Matt asked.
“There are a few things we can try,” Dr. Graham said as he finished washing his hands. “Including a few prescription nausea medications that are safe. I know you don’t like pills,” he said, turning to Adam. “But you need to be able to hold food down.”
Adam didn’t look too happy about that. “Well. I’m used to the Sepel, so I guess this isn’t any worse.”
“No, it isn’t. We don’t normally start prenatal checkups yet, but with your more extreme nausea, I thought it would be a good idea. So, we’ll go ahead and get the basic checkup out of the way and the blood work ordered, and then I can give you a prescription for vitamins and nausea medication.”
Matt held Adam’s hand as the doctor did the examination, including the internal check. Adam was obviously uncomfortable when his legs were up in the stirrups, and Matt did his best to distract Adam while the doctor worked. Adam squeezed Matt’s hand a few times, especially when the doctor pressed on Adam’s stomach, and he seemed grateful for Matt’s presence.
“It’s too early to be exact, but so far, things feel like they’re on track. Next appointment, we’ll try to hear the heartbeat, but it’s a bit too early for that now.”
Adam nodded. “Yeah, I figured.”
“Soon, though. Go ahead and get dressed,” Dr. Graham said, patting Adam’s shoulder. “We’ll get the rest together.”
Matt grabbed Adam’s clothes and held them out as Adam stripped the gown off. He dressed in record time, making Matt chuckle. “Cold?”
“Fucking freezing,” Adam grumbled.
Once Adam had his clothes on, Matt pulled him in and wrapped both arms around him. “I’ll warm you up.”
He expected Adam to fight, so when he burrowed into Matt’s arms instead it surprised him. He tightened his arms and kissed Adam’s temple.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome,” Matt said, not sure what to do with it. “Are you okay?”
Adam nodded. “Yeah.”
Matt cupped Adam’s face. “Are you sure? You seem off today.”
Adam sighed. “I’ve been… out of sorts. Some of it is the morning sickness. It’s seriously starting to piss me off. But it’s other stuff too. I’d think I’m too early to be emotional, but I don’t know what else it is.” He rested his head against Matt’s chest.
A few ideas about that swirled around Matt’s head, but they were not in the right place to discuss it. Instead, he kissed the top of Adam’s head and simply held him closer. He didn’t like it, but he was going to have to force a
