by … everything. His size … his piercing eyes … just the sheer dominating aura that surrounds him strikes me speechless.
“Nikon Zylyk.” His hand hangs suspended for a moment between us before I start mentally kicking my own ass. My own past creeps in as I think what it’d be like to be hit by him … Get it together, Lilibeth.
Reaching out, our hands meet. “Nice to—”
My voice cuts off as I yank my hand from his grasp. What the hell was that?
The shock of electricity that shot from his body to mine when our hands met was more than any static charge I’ve ever felt! I’ve never experienced anything like it before. Rubbing my hand on my leg, I try to compose myself as I glance down at his casual dress pants. I see long legs, thick as tree trunks, leading to huge, rugged boots. Nothing that should pick up a static charge from this office carpeting.
Looking back up to his face, I realize he’s still holding his hand out. No, thank you. I can’t even look at him. He's so good looking.
I don’t need to be reminded of what I’ve sworn off. It’s been years for a reason. Pulling out the chair to my left, I sit down next to Aron. I’ve worked too hard to be taken seriously to look like an idiot in front of my boss, the Police Commissioner
“Excellent. Now, Lilibeth, I need you to take Nikon and Alisha out on a little reconnaissance mission. You haven’t been local, so they’ll need to prep you on the background of their investigation. It’s been kept quiet and put under the guise of individual missing persons cases, but I’m going to leave you three to it.”
And there he goes. With a slam, the door closes behind him. Typical.
Of course Aron wouldn’t take the time to welcome me back or let me settle in. I’ll probably be lucky to get a desk. If it’s anything like the last time I worked in this office, I’ll share it with someone.
Smiling serenely, I turn to face Alisha, folding my hands on the table in front of me. “Okay, give me the basics.”
Instead of Alisha answering me, it’s Nikon—the man, of course—taking the lead. “Have you heard anything about the Mosfellsbær Golf Club incident that happened this past weekend?”
I’ve only been back for a day, and most of that was traveling. Shaking my head, I study him as he begins to explain. His hair is deep black, styled short and combed back from his forehead. In the overhead fluorescent lights, his skin has a gray tint as if he doesn’t get out in the sun much.
But it’s his features that are incredible. Large eyes, a straight nose, and a pair of full lips that right now have a deep rumble coming out of them. That voice … it distracts me as I try to concentrate on what he’s saying …
“… highly confidential. We’ve been following up on the virus-exposed members from the golf course, but so far, haven’t run across anyone who may have been patient zero … if this makes sense?” He pauses, giving me a funny look.
Realizing my mouth is hanging open, I close it and smile slightly, straightening my back and nodding as if I’m paying careful attention. I’m trying to, at least. When I make it clear I’m with him, he continues. “But yesterday, we received information that leads us to believe the original carrier arrived from Kitimat, Canada for training to a company called Mannvit. They’re large, with offices all over the world—”
“Yes, I’m aware of who they are.” Cutting him off, I look up at his glaring beauty briefly before focusing on Alisha next to him again. “I’m sorry, please continue.”
“No need to apologize.” Nikon’s voice has turned slow and warm, coating my senses and causing tingles to shoot down my spine to the base of my tailbone. Another, more uncomfortable tingling starts between my legs, and I look up to see him staring at me with a small smile. “You can interrupt me any time.”
Scowling, I look to Alisha, raising my eyebrows like, “Do you put up with this all the time?”, but her expression remains neutral, giving nothing away.
“We want to go over to Mannvit and find out who met Brad Nixon when he arrived from Canada. We’ve been looking for him in North America since yesterday when we found out that he’s our most likely carrier of the virus to this area.”
