respond. Part of me wanted to drag him to the restroom or any dark corner and let him have his wicked way with me. But something was stopping me. Maybe it was the fact that any of the girls in the office could see us, or maybe it was the fact that this wasn’t the way I wanted to lose my virginity.
“Let’s go and get a drink.” I grabbed his arm and began pulling him to the bar before he said or did something else that would turn me on even more. I didn’t need for him to touch me or kiss me or lick me right now. Right now, it wouldn’t take much for me to agree to anything that he asked.
“Only water?” Tate watched me as I gulped my glass of water greedily.
“I don’t need any more alcohol. It’s going to make me make some bad decisions.” I smiled ruefully at him. “And I don’t want to do that.”
“I don’t mind if you make any bad decisions.”
“I’m sure you don’t, but you’re also my boss, and my coworkers are here and well, you know, it could be complicated.”
“I like complicated.”
“I don’t.” I shook my head and continued to gulp my water down so that I could ignore the way that his blue eyes were gazing at me so intensely. “I’m not a good-time girl, Tate.”
“I never thought you were.”
“Okay.” I nodded. “So, any fun plans for the weekend?”
“Why, is that an offer?”
“No.” I rolled my eyes.
“I need to get some work done this weekend as I’m going to Charleston next weekend.” He made a face.
“I thought you were going in two weeks?”
“An emergency came up.” He toyed with the glass of whiskey in his hands. “My sister wants me to come home this weekend to help with something.”
“Oh?”
“Our dad is having issues with the man she’s marrying.” His lips twisted in annoyance. “She wants me to run interference.”
“Oh, the Democrat?”
“Yeah, his name is Sam. My dad wants Rose to call off the wedding.”
“Oh, wow.” My eyes widened. “It’s that serious? He hates him that much?”
“I don’t know the whole deal.” Tate shook his head and sighed. “I didn’t want to think about this tonight. Sorry.”
“Do you not want to go home?”
“It’s just a lot. My mom will try and set me up with all her friend’s daughters.” He made a face. “I don’t have time for that.”
“Oh, I thought you’d be happy to meet more women.” I ignored the way jealousy twisted in my stomach.
“I used to be very happy.” He smiled ruefully. “Until I realized there was a hidden agenda. I’m not looking to marry anyone.”
“So tell your mom that.”
“She doesn’t care. Rose thinks I should bring a woman home with me next weekend to get her off of my back.”
“Are you going to?”
“Hell no.” He shook his head. “I wouldn’t be interested in taking home any of the women I’ve fucked, I don’t need them to get the wrong idea. I guess I’ll have to suck it up. Maybe I’ll be a bad boy again. Mom nearly didn’t live down the last time I screwed around with one of her friend’s daughters.”
“That sounds like a story I need to hear. Are you going to tell me what happened?”
“Trust me, you don’t want to know.”
“I do want to know.”
“I’ll tell you if you have another drink.”
“I’ll have another drink if you promise not to kiss me again tonight or try anything else.”
“But what if I want to?” He took a step closer to me. “What if I’m already missing the taste of your lips?”
“Tate, no.” I took a step back. “We can’t.”
“But we can. We really can.”
“Tate!”
“Fine.” He grinned. “I promise to not make any more moves tonight if you have another drink with me.”
“Fine.”
Immediately, he turned around to order from the bartender again. I stared at his muscular back, itching to run my hands down it. I imagined taking his shirt off and licking his back.
“Stop it, Jane!” I whispered under my breath as butterflies fluttered in my stomach.
“Here’s another vodka Sprite.” Tate handed me another drink. “Cheers.” He held his glass up to mine and we clinked. I took a sip of the drink and swallowed two large gulps.
“So now tell me what happened with you and your mom’s friend’s daughter,” I said, looking up at him from under slightly veiled eyes, in an attempt to be sexy.
He leaned against the bar, getting into storyteller mode. “So, it was when I was twenty. I was
