at the gym.” I sighed. “I do agree that that leaves it to a very narrow group of people.”
“Well, at least he doesn’t think it’s me.” Magnolia laughed. “Jagger is good for something.”
“Do you think he could think it’s Millie, Birdy, or Olivia?”
“Millie? No. She’s too mouthy to leave anonymous notes. Birdy or Olivia, yeah, it could be possible, but unlikely.” Magnolia shook her head. “If I was him, I wouldn’t think it was either of them.”
“Yeah, true.” I sighed. “Though it could be someone at his gym.”
“Yeah.” Magnolia nodded. “Or even someone in his building.”
“Yeah.” I looked up and realized we were on the corner of Bush and Fillmore. “We’re here.” We walked into the small bakery. My blood sugar rejoiced at the sight of the counters covered in cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats. “I’m totally getting the princess cake and a coffee. What do you want? It’s my treat.”
“No way, girl.” Magnolia shook her head. “You can’t spend your money on me.”
“I can and I will.” I smiled at her. “You’re my best friend in San Francisco and I’ve made you walk all the way here from the office. I owe you.”
“Well, if you put it like that.” She grinned. “I think I’ll have an iced mocha and a lemon tart. I’ll try your princess cake if you don’t mind.”
“Sure.” I walked over to the counter and placed my order, trying to ignore the niggling feeling at the back of my mind that I was playing with fire by leaving notes for Tate.
Eventually, he would find out it was me, and what would happen after that?
Chapter 5
Tate
I stared at my watch for what must have been the eighth time in the last five minutes and sighed. Where the hell was Jane? She and Magnolia had been gone for over two hours now. I knew she was mad at me, but I also knew she was testing me.
“I should fire her,” I muttered under my breath, but I knew that I wouldn’t. Not with memories of her first day on my mind. I’d been a jerk, but I hadn’t been able to stop myself. At first, I’d truly believed she was a stripper that Jagger had sent me as a joke. All of the employees had been told to start on the next day, and when I’d seen her in her short skirt and bright red lipstick, my brain had gone haywire. Jagger and I had a history of pulling stupid pranks on each other, and I’d believed he’d sent me a sexy strip-o-gram for my first day. I’d soon realized that Jane was no stripper, but by that point, I’d already been too hard and horny not want to see how far she would go.
Granted, it hadn’t been the smartest decision of my life. I hadn’t even really intended on going all that far until she’d taken her jacket off. I wasn’t sure if she’d realized that both her top and bra were see-through, and I’d seen her hard nipples poking through the shirt right away. And when she’d told me she liked to dress sexy for herself, I’d wanted to ask her what she did with herself when she’d had on her sexy gear. When she’d started to give me a little lap dance, I’d thought I’d died and gone to heaven, but of course, everything had blown up pretty soon after that. I knew that I’d been a bit of a jerk, but hadn’t known how to apologize for lying about who I was. I’d thought it had all been very funny. I’d even suggested locking the door and christening the office, but it had become apparent very quickly that Jane had no interest in going any further.
Too bad. It really would have been a great way to start our business relationship.
“I will do that soon.” I heard Magnolia’s voice drifting through the office and I stood up and walked to my door. Sure enough, there stood Magnolia and Jane by their cubicles, talking.
“Jane, I need to see you in my office.”
“Sure.” Jane gave me a dismissive glance over her shoulder and continued talking to Magnolia. For some reason that infuriated me and I raised my voice.
“Now, Jane,” I commanded and walked back to my desk. Ten seconds later she walked into my office.
“Can I help you?” She looked at me innocently.
“Please come and take a seat and close the door behind you.”
“Why do I have to close the door behind me?” She didn’t move.
“Because
