sigh, she sat up and kissed Athena’s forehead before slipping on her clothes.
Athena reached for her with a languid smile. “Don’t go yet.”
Doris took Athena’s large hand in hers and kissed her calloused knuckles. “I have to, my love.” It was almost time for light’s out. Doris always wished her students a goodnight.
Doris shook wavy brown hair over her shoulder and buttoned her blouse. How much she’d enjoyed this siren’s body she’d temporarily adopted. She was young and flexible, not to mention orgasms were so intense, she saw stars. No wonder sirens were promiscuous. Doris admired her perky breasts once more before fastening the last button, regretting she’d have to transform back into her old body before she was discovered.
Kneeling over her lover, she kissed Athena once more, then reached for her wand. When a loud crash filled her ears, she screamed, hitting the floor so hard, her head spun.
She gagged on acrid smoke and shielded her face with her hands. Dragon’s breath! Those mischievous Firesbreath brothers must have escaped detention. She would make them pay!
“Athena!” she rasped, sitting up and rubbing her dizzy head. “Are you okay?”
Her lover answered with a groan.
Doris’s heart seized. “Athena!” she cried, fanning her face. “I can’t see you!”
Peering into the smoke, she saw that the wall with the fireplace had crumbled, exposing them to the elements and giving her a glimpse of the nearby graveyard, illuminated by thin shards of moonlight. She made out the shadowy figures of three winged dragons. “You miscreants!” She shook a fist at them. “Look what you’ve done! I’ll have you in the dungeon for the rest of the year.”
When the tallest of the dragons moved forward, snarling, her breath caught in her throat. He looked familiar, but he wasn’t one of her students—not one of her current students anyway.
“Wh-who are you?” she demanded, wishing she had her wand.
The dragon’s upper lip lifted, revealing rows of razor sharp teeth. “Never mind who we are.” The serpent’s head weaved, following her like a snake cornering a rabbit. “You’re the Goldenwand heiress.”
She opened her mouth to contradict him but thought better of it. This was a kidnapping, and she’d be damned if she let them take one of her students.
Stepping back, she nearly tripped over her wand. With a quick flick of the wrist, she brought it to her hand, then yelled in pain when it was zapped away with a shock so powerful, she was driven to her knees.
“Did you think you could best me?” he purred, nuzzling her hair.
She backed up until she was pressed against the door or what was left of it. Crying out, she shielded her eyes when a dragon lunged for her, her knees buckling as she slumped into his open jowls.
THE STUDENTS HAD JUST finished their supper when Bodicea Bubblebosom noticed the change in the night sky. In a matter of seconds, the dark clouds had turned a brickish hue, as if illuminated by a fire within. Bodicea’s veins solidified with fear. It was just as Doris had predicted. War had come to their school.
She blew her whistle three times, waving her wand above her head. “Students, this is not a drill. Wands at the ready!”
Her charges snapped their wands out of their robes and fell to their knees, ducking under the tables as they’d practiced in drills.
A dragon’s roar was Bodicea’s only warning before the walls went up in flames. Bodicea threw a protective shield around her students as the other professors aimed their wands at the five massive dragons hovering over the charred remains of what had once been their school. They fought fire with fire, until the scorched air was so stifling, it hurt to breathe.
They would not survive this battle much longer.
Dame Doublewart and Lady Hoofenmouth were nowhere in sight, so Bodicea chanted the illusion spell, creating what appeared to be a powerful explosion. Then she whispered the secret password to unlock the dungeon. Bodicea stifled a scream when the floor buckled and she and her students fell to the bottom of the pit.
After hitting the dirt, she blinked up at the gray bricks, which shifted back into place above them. Her charges were dead quiet, knowing the slightest sound could give away their hiding place. Goddess save them if they hadn’t fooled the beasts.
