like… really. I have severe ADD and forget I have the damn thing most of the time, so if I email you, it’s important! Lol! Also, if you have a moment, please leave a review for Doc. Even if it’s just one sentence on Amazon, it helps an author’s work be seen by other readers. Goodreads and Bookbub are helpful too!
Love,
KD
A Note From the Author & Acknowledgments
For three and a half years, my readers have begged me for Doc’s story, ever since they met him in Truth Revealed. Corbin, Seth, and Brian might’ve gotten their stories first, but it was actually Doc’s voice I heard in my head before all others, and it was him who told me their tales.
Dr. Neil Walker is based on my own amazing therapist, but instead of a big, delicious, hulking Viking of a man… she is an incredible, patient, astoundingly wise Jamaican woman named Dr. Walker with braids that meet the floor that she keeps raveled atop her beautiful head. I’ll never be able to thank her enough for all she did for me.
Keeping with the theme, I decided his first name, Neil, would come from my other favorite Jamaican, Neil Reynolds, Aurora Rose Reynolds’s hubby. He loves and treats his wife and son the way a true Alpha should, and I wanted my very favorite voice in my head to embody that.
While I cherished every single message, comment, and email begging for Doc, I also got terrible stage fright, thinking there would be no way to live up to everyone’s expectations, everyone’s huge hopes for our head honcho. And with that stage fright came writer’s block. I’m one of those authors who can actually hear their characters’ voices, and I couldn’t even hear Doc whispering. It’s like he was hiding, shoving other people ahead of him in line to get their story first. So it was badass Corbin. Then it was sweet and funny Seth. And then it was the terrifying yet gentle giant Brian. AND THEN… still not Doc. Fun fact! I wrote a Club Alias spin-off novel, A Lesson in Blackmail, coming October 2020, before I wrote Doc. Nathaniel and Evie had sessions with Doc, and by the time I finished their story, it’s like the floodgates opened, and Doc wasn’t just whispering his story in my ear; he was screaming it through a freaking bullhorn. Over 150,000 words in sixteen days. Two novels, back-to-back without stopping.
So thank you, Nathaniel Black IV—eighteen-year-old senior, Dom in training, in love with your high school’s librarian who you find out is a submissive at Club Alias and blackmail her into helping you figure out what these… urges are inside you. You helped me unlock all the secrets of Doc’s past, and you yourself will forever be a special voice inside my mind.
Thank you to my CC for being the face of my Astrid. I couldn’t figure out a way to bring “Sierra” back from Hawaii, but hey, I made you a cover model. I love you, sisterwife! #DrSirDaddy
Thank you to my Nola Bitches for rooting me on the entire time I was in my cave and for reading what I’d word-vomitted at the end of every night! Especially Rachel, my PA Extraordinaire. You made my life when you said I gave you a book hangover.
Author Goal: Accomplished.
Thank you Crystal Grizzard for being my amazing Alpha Reader. I named the bitchiest skank prostitute after the sweetest woman on the planet. You’re welcome lol!
Thank you Stacia and Vanessa for your incredibly helpful work in the developmental stage of editing. You made sure my word vomit actually made any sense, and I’m so grateful to you! Your comments and notes gave me life.
Thank you to my Barb and Becky-boo. My Hot Tree dream team. There are no editors on this planet I trust more than y’all, and I’m so thankful you never hesitate to help perfect my stories. Love you two so much!
Thank you, Golden Czermak aka FuriousFotog, for capturing the photo that finally screamed “I’M DOC, BITCH!” and thank you, Kim Tatum, for that message three years ago suggesting Steffen Hughes. I’d always pictured him as the country hero, but that gallery of him in his work clothes… Lawd Jesus. He was the embodiment of the image I had of Doc inside my head to a freaking T, as if my subconscious had been picturing him the entire time and I just hadn’t realized it. So, thanks for your face, Steffen! LOL!
Cassy Roop—my love for you knows no bounds. Thank you for everything you do for me. Thank you for being a mind reader. Thank you for being fucking brilliant. And thank you for tolerating this hot mess. Never leave me.
Thank you to my Top Contributors in my reader group, KD-Rob’s Mob. I made you “exotic dancers.” Your parents will be proud. ;)
Thank you to all the readers, bloggers, authors, friends, and family who shared Doc’s cover and release!
Finally, thank you to my husband, Jason. There is no way I could do this without you—life, write, none of it. You built me an entire Beauty and the Beast library, and then you said for me to lock myself in and work. You kept me fed, our kids alive, and somehow ended each night still wanting to love on me instead of kill me for abandoning you for my imaginary friends. I love you more than Milky Way Midnights.
One last thing I can’t forget…
RIP sweet Scout Dog. I made you Doc’s furbaby years ago, and we lost you before you had your big moment in the spotlight. I managed to make it through the entire book without crying, but the moment my fingers typed “Epilogue, Scout” I completely lost it and wrote the last chapter blind from tears. But I know you’re herding us and keeping us safe from across the rainbow bridge. Love you, boy.
