gives Fallon an apologetic smile. “Sorry, my friend. Now your sinuses will be acting up again.”
Fallon waves it away. “I’ll take something for it when we’re done eating.”
My gaze is still locked on Mila. “So, you and Justin?”
She shakes her head and places her napkin over her lap. “There’s no Justin and me.”
A server brings our food, and while we eat, my eyes keep finding their way to Mila.
Drop it, Jase. You’re just overprotective because she’s your friend.
Obviously, Mila’s going to date, and with her fucking beauty, I’m actually surprised one of the guys on campus hasn’t swooped in to claim her.
The thought makes me freeze, and the glare on my face darkens.
“What’s wrong?” Fallon asks.
I continue cutting a piece of my steak. “Nothing.”
“Yeah, right,” Jade says. “It looks like you’re about to kill someone.”
“I said it’s nothing,” I snap. I drop my cutlery and take a deep breath before I give the girls a remorseful smile. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to snap.”
Fallon reaches over to me and gives my arm a squeeze. “Let’s enjoy the meal.”
My eyes meet Fallon’s, and hers clearly say we’ll talk later. Thinking of a quick lie to get me out of the hot seat, I say, “I’m just worried about working with my father this summer.”
“I’ll be there to help. We’ll be fine,” Fallon says, a look of encouragement on her face.
I force a playful smile around my lips. “Yeah? Any way I can bribe you into doing my work?”
Fallon glares at me. “Nope.” But then her expression softens. “You won’t be alone. You’ll have Hana, Hunter, and myself there.”
I let out a heavy breath before I glance at Mila. I catch her staring at me with concern tightening her features. Giving her a grin, I focus on my dinner so the girls will drop the subject.
Why did Mila getting flowers piss me off so much?
Ignoring the question, I shove it deep down.
My eyes drift to her face again, and I watch as she nibbles on a shoestring potato. I take in her long silky black hair, and her sharp green eyes and full lips.
Those damn cheekbones of hers make her look fucking sexy.
My eyes glide down her neck, her skin snowy white. It’s in total contrast with her dark hair, and it makes her look more feminine.
I’d be blind and castrated not to notice she’s fucking gorgeous.
And every day, I’m becoming more aware of her beauty.
Fine, so you’re attracted to Mila. So what? It’s not like anything will ever come of it. Stick to flirting with her because that’s as far as you can take things without fucking up your friendship.
My thoughts turn to the past month, and I remember how teasing the ever-loving shit out of Mila was only for fun.
And for fun, it will remain, Jase.
Needing a drink, I get the attention of a waiter and quickly place an order.
My eyes drift back to Mila, and I watch as she cuts a piece from her steak. Her hands are small and probably half the size of mine.
Something stirs in my chest again, and my eyes narrow at the foreign emotion.
I wonder what would’ve happened if she weren’t my friend.
The sudden thought packs one hell of a punch.
Yeah, I know what would’ve happened. Without thinking twice about it, I’d pursue her.
“Jase,” Mila snaps, and my eyes fly up to her face. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
I clear my throat and shift uncomfortably in my chair. “I’m not staring at you.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” she mumbles. Her eyes linger on my face for a couple of seconds. “It really looked like you wanted to kill me. Are you that worried about working at CRC?”
Taking the out she’s unknowingly given me, I nod. “Yeah, it’s a lot of pressure to know I’ll be taking over as the CEO of CRC Holdings. I don’t know how my dad handles it.”
“You’ll be fine.” Mila’s mouth curves into a soft smile, one I haven’t seen in a while. “I believe in you.”
My heart starts to beat faster, and a cold sweat breaks out over my body. Shifting my chair back, I climb to my feet. “Shit, I think I’m coming down with something. I’ll see you at the suite.”
Fallon abandons her meal and jumps out of her chair. “The flu? I’ll walk back with you and get you some meds.”
“Don’t worry. I’m just going to sleep it off.”
I stalk out of the restaurant, my heart hammering against my ribs, and placing my hand over my
