working for me.”
“I’m sure it isn’t. Let me see what I can do.”
“Thanks. Hey, any chance I could get my phone while I wait?”
“That’s not procedure,” he said, and I just looked at him. He held my gaze for a minute and then rolled his eyes. “Fine, I’ll have someone get it for you.” He left the room, and I tried to think of something besides the most painful ways I could kill a man. A couple minutes later, the door opened, and a young woman in uniform handed me my phone.
“The Chief said to give you this. But he told me to tell you not to call the Senator.”
“You can tell the chief I’ll be good.”
I picked up the phone and scrolled through the texts. I had one from Ryan letting me know he’d called Mitch. One from Rand that was nothing but laughing face emojis—fucker. But most importantly, one from Fredrick telling me he’d heard from Rebecca and she was on her way to get Trey. I immediately called Fredrick.
“Hey, you out yet?” he said by way of answering.
“Not yet, Mitch is working on it. Did Becca say where Trey was?”
“No, she just said he’d called her and told her where he was. That she was going after him, and that he asked her to let you know he was okay.”
“Okay, I don’t like it. I’d rather go with her to get him, but it isn’t like I can go after him now anyway, at least not until Mitch gets me out of here.”
“Either me or one of your brothers will head that way to pick you up. It won’t take Mitch long now that he’s there.”
“You know Mitch?”
“Yeah, I dated his sister a few years back. We stayed friends even though the thing between me and Maria didn’t work out. He’s a good guy.”
“Okay. If you hear anything else from Rebecca, let me know.”
I was relieved because we’d heard from him and he was okay, but I wouldn’t be able to let my guard down fully until he was home. And when he got home, I wasn’t letting him out of my sight again. I didn't care who called.
The door opened, and Mitch walked in. “Okay, you’re good to go,” he said, looking quite pleased with himself.
“Just like that, I’m good to go?”
“I put in a call to the Senator. As a concerned citizen, you know. I wanted to make sure he understood how sorry I was he’d been harassed, but I wanted to make sure he wanted to press charges. I told him how once you were actually arrested, what led to the arrest would all be public knowledge, including your relationship with his son.”
I looked at him, mouth agape. If nothing else, Mitch had balls. “And what did he say?”
“He said he never intended for you to be arrested, just removed from the property. That it was a family matter, and he had no plans to press charges. So you’re free to go.”
Chapter 32
Trey
When I had lunch ready, I went and let Gavin know. He took a good look around the property and then came in to eat. We didn’t talk much. I mean, what should I say? Did my father say you were here to protect me, or did he mention he was holding me here against my will?
When lunch was over, I decided to watch a movie while I waited on Becca, and Gavin sat down in the room with me. Every so often he would get up and check out the front windows, but by the time the first movie ended, he seemed to relax a bit. About a quarter into the second movie, we both heard tires crunch on the gravel as someone pulled up to the house. “You stay here. The Senator said no one was allowed in the house but family and Reverend Adams, so I’ll see who it is and send them on their way.”
“Just be careful,” I warned him. The last thing I wanted was someone to get injured because of me, but it had been long enough for Becca to get here so I assumed it was her. Still, I moved into the kitchen and stepped behind the wall that separated the kitchen from the entryway. I was within sprinting distance of the other door if I needed to make a run for it.
I listened carefully as Gavin opened the door. Footsteps moved down the hall into the sunroom. I heard another male voice and tried
