had sent me before I started. I was reading the first one when Trey spoke.
“So aren’t you going to ask?”
“About?” Of course, I had questions for him. There were a lot of things I wanted to know. Like how many people knew? How trustworthy was this Ash guy? How did he learn to dance like that? Did he taste as good as he smelled? Not that I would ever get the answer to the last one. Not as long as I was his bodyguard.
“You know, about the club.” He held up the mask he wore earlier. “About why I was there.”
“Oh, I have a pretty good idea why you were there. But yes, Trey, we will have to talk about it. Normally I would say your sexuality was none of my business, but I think it’s obvious that it’s tied into the threats, so in order to protect you, I’ll need to know some things.”
He tilted his head to one side studying me. “Do you work for me or for my father?” he asked.
“Right now? Your father. He’s the one who hired us.”
“Okay,” he said with a shrug. “Then I don’t have anything else to say. I’m tired. I’ll see you in the morning.” He laid his mask on the bar and walked up the stairs.
Chapter 9
Watchman
Anyone else would have said it was luck that had me getting ready to pull out of the Cobens’ driveway just as Malcolm stepped out from between the hedges in front of the house next door. But there was no such thing as luck. There was only God’s perfect timing showing me just how far the golden boy had fallen. I turned off my car’s headlights and waited. The streetlights that lined the road illuminated him, allowing me to watch as he slipped into the passenger’s seat of a blue sedan.
I started to pull out on the road to follow when another form popped out of the bushes. I watched as the bodyguard the Senator had hired put his hands on his hips and stared after the car as they drove off. I was afraid he would wait until they got too far away for me to follow, but no, in another sign that I had the favor of the Lord, he turned and disappeared back the way he came. Allowing me to pull out on the road before the car’s taillights were out of sight.
I sped up until I was close enough to be sure I wouldn’t lose them and stayed right behind them until they pulled into the parking lot of a club. I drove slowly through and found a spot to park that would allow me to see him. I gripped the steering wheel and forced myself to breathe in and out slowly. The need to follow him was strong. I wanted to see what was happening inside, but I couldn’t make myself open the door.
He climbed out of the sedan wearing a mask that made him look mysterious and sinful. My breath caught in my throat, my heart rate increased, and sweat beaded on my forehead. “No!” I shouted into the car as I pounded my hands on the steering wheel. No! I would not allow the evil that he carried with him to touch me.
Chapter 10
Trey
When I woke up to light streaming in through the window, I was shocked. After what happened last night, I hadn’t expected to sleep at all, but at some point, I did. I stayed awake playing on my phone until I got a text from Ash saying he was home safe, and then I’d lain there thinking about all kinds of things. How stupid it was for me to try to sneak out of the house, how easy it had been for Roman to find me, and what to do about the fact that Roman knew. But mostly, I thought about the way his body had felt pressed up behind me for those few brief seconds while we danced.
My body fit against his so perfectly. I swear I could still feel his hand on my bare stomach. Like his handprint was branded there. I shook my head. How sexy my bodyguard felt last night was the last thing I should be focusing on. Instead, I needed to figure out what to do about the fact that he’d been there at all. The fact that he knew I was in a gay club was a much more pressing matter.
For all I knew, he had already
